Chapter 3: The Ghost in the Footage

The private elevator doors opened smoothly into Elias's penthouse.
Marcus carried Seraphina's limp body effortlessly over his broad shoulder.
He carefully laid her down on the plush leather sofa.
Dr. Aris, Elias’s personal physician, was already waiting by the window.
The doctor immediately knelt and began checking her vital signs.
"Her pulse is remarkably slow, Mr. Vance," Dr. Aris reported quietly.
"What exactly did she ingest?"
"We were hoping you could tell us, Doctor," Elias replied with a cold edge to his voice.
Elias walked over to the crystal decanter and poured a small glass of scotch.
He watched the physician carefully draw a blood sample from his fiancée's pale arm.
The woman he had planned to marry was now a total stranger.
"I will rush this to the private lab," Dr. Aris said, packing his equipment away.
"She will sleep deeply, but safely, until we get the toxicology results."
Marcus escorted the doctor out to the elevator and returned quickly to the living room.
"I secured the restaurant's camera feeds, boss," Marcus announced.
He handed a sleek silver tablet directly to Elias.
The screen displayed the elegant dining room from a high, wide angle.
Elias tapped the glass screen to play the video.
He watched the digital version of himself sitting alone at the corner table.
Then, the small girl in the grey hoodie appeared at the edge of the frame.
She slipped past the busy maître d' with practiced, invisible ease.
"Look closely at her movements, Marcus," Elias noted quietly.
"She knows exactly how to avoid eye contact and navigate the blind spots."
"She moved like a trained professional," Marcus agreed with a frown.
Elias paused the video on a relatively clear frame of the girl's face.
Her large hazel eyes were focused with absolute, desperate determination.
"Who are you?" Elias whispered to the frozen digital image.
"I ran her face through our security databases," Marcus said.
"There are absolutely zero matches in the system."
"She is a complete ghost, totally off the grid."
Elias zoomed in tightly on the girl's worn jacket.
There was a small, heavily faded logo near the collar.
It looked like a vintage crest from an old local institution.
"Look right here, Marcus."
"St. Jude's Home for Children," Marcus read the faint lettering aloud.
"That facility was permanently shut down three years ago."
Elias set the tablet down heavily on the glass coffee table.
He looked over at Seraphina, who was still breathing softly in her chemically induced sleep.
"Then we start our search at the old orphanage."

"I need to know why a child risked everything to save my life tonight."
"And more importantly, I need to know who sent her."
