Chapter 5: Secrets in the Binding

Elias opened the leather-bound notebook with careful precision.
The dim light of the camping lantern illuminated the crisp, expensive pages.
The first few entries were mundane details of Seraphina's daily schedule.
However, as he flipped further into the book, the elegant handwriting changed into hurried, frantic scrawls.
He saw his own name circled multiple times in thick red ink.
Beside his name were detailed lists of his private offshore bank accounts and corporate access codes.
"She was cataloging my entire financial portfolio," Elias stated quietly to Marcus.
"It appears she was planning a complete asset transfer, boss," Marcus replied grimly.
Elias turned another page and stopped completely still.
He stared at a complex timeline meticulously mapped out across a two-page spread.
The timeline culminated on tonight's exact date with a single chilling word.
Liquidation.
Elias closed the notebook and took a deep, steadying breath.
The woman he loved had been systematically planning his demise for months.
He looked back at the small girl who was still watching him intently from the floor.
"You are incredibly brave for bringing this to me," Elias said gently.
"What is your name, little one?"
The girl pulled the thin, faded blanket tighter around her small shoulders.
"My name is Lily."
"Well, Lily, it is not safe for you to stay here anymore," Elias told her firmly.
"The people who were working with Seraphina might come looking for this book."
Lily's hazel eyes darted nervously toward the dark, empty hallway.
"I have nowhere else to go, Mister."
Elias stood up and extended his warm hand toward the frightened child.
"You are coming with us, Lily."
"I promise that no one will ever hurt you again."
Lily hesitated, looking from Elias's outstretched hand to Marcus's imposing, shadowy figure.
Marcus stepped back slightly and offered her a surprisingly gentle, reassuring smile.
Slowly, Lily reached out and placed her small, cold hand into Elias's palm.
"Let us get you out of the cold," Elias said softly.

He picked up his expensive suit jacket and draped it carefully over her tiny shoulders.
The three of them walked out of the abandoned sanctuary together, leaving the darkness behind.
