Chapter 1 - The Interruption

The dining room of Il Sogno was a sanctuary for the city’s elite. It was a place of hushed negotiations, expensive cigars, and hundred-dollar steaks. Vincent Corleto, a man whose name commanded both deep respect and quiet terror, sat at his usual corner table. He was a man of impeccably tailored suits and unyielding principles, holding court over a room of loyal associates.
He raised his crystal glass, taking a slow sip of his martini. Then, the heavy oak doors at the front of the restaurant flew open.
"Please! They're hurting my mama!"
A tiny figure burst into the room. It was a little girl, no older than seven, wearing a soiled, light-colored dress. She had a bleeding nose and fresh scrapes on her pale cheeks. She slipped right past the imposing guards at the door, her frantic eyes scanning the room of bewildered men in suits. Instinctively, she ran straight toward the most commanding presence in the room: Vincent.
She crashed into his table, sobbing. Vincent set his glass down slowly. The room went dead silent. He didn't yell; he didn't motion for his guards to drag her away. Instead, he placed his large, heavy hand gently over her small, trembling one.
"What's your name, child?" he asked, his voice a low, steady rumble.
"Sophie," she cried, tears cutting tracks through the dirt on her face. "They're beating her because she had no money!"
Vincent’s jaw tightened. The faint warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an icy resolve. He stood up abruptly, tossing his linen napkin onto the table.
"Who did this?" he muttered to himself, turning his gaze to his men. He raised a hand, palm out, bringing the entire room to a standstill. "Get the car. Nobody move until I say."

Sophie looked up at him, her small hands tightly gripping the lapels of his expensive navy jacket. "Are you going to save her?"
Vincent leaned down, looking directly into her tear-filled eyes. "Not if I can help it, and I can help a great deal."
