Chapter 4 - Safe Haven

Vincent knelt on the wet pavement beside the woman. She was bruised, trembling, and barely conscious.

"Mama!" Sophie cried out, scrambling out of the car and throwing her arms around her mother's neck.

"Sophie," the woman whispered, her voice cracking. "You're safe..."

"We're getting you out of here," Vincent said softly. He motioned to Marco. "Help her up. Carefully. Take us to Dr. Evans."

Thirty minutes later, they arrived at a discreet, private clinic funded by Vincent’s syndicate. The woman, whose name Vincent learned was Elena, was immediately taken into a warm, sterile room to be treated. Sophie refused to let go of Vincent’s hand, so he sat in a leather chair by the door, patiently waiting while the doctor stitched the cut above Elena's eyebrow.

When the pain medication finally kicked in, Elena opened her eyes fully and looked at the man who had saved them. She recognized him from the whispers on the street. He was a mob boss, a man of ruthless reputation. Yet, here he was, letting a battered seven-year-old sleep against his arm.

"Why?" Elena whispered, wincing as she spoke. "Why did you help us?"
