Chapter 17 - The New Associate

A week after graduation, Vincent was sitting in his downtown office, reviewing the financial reports of his legitimate holding company. A knock at the door interrupted him. To his surprise, it wasn't Marco, but Sophie. She was dressed in a sharp, professional blazer, holding a leather briefcase.

"Sophie," Vincent said, standing up with the help of his cane. "What a pleasant surprise. Have you come to show off that expensive degree?"

"Actually, Mr. Vincent," she said, taking a seat across from him. "I'm here for a job."

Vincent raised an eyebrow. "Sophie, you have offers from Wall Street. You don't want to work for a tired old man."

"You have millions in legitimate assets, real estate, and charitable clinics, and your accounting system is a mess," she said with a warm but challenging smile. "You need a chief financial officer you can trust implicitly. Someone who won't be intimidated by the rougher edges of your past."

Vincent stared at her, seeing the fierce, unbreakable spirit of the little girl who had once grabbed his lapels and demanded justice. He chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound. "You drive a hard bargain, kid. You're hired."
