Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,

casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast

Rowan Hale stood beside the longest table in the Aurelia Grand's private dining salon, wearing clothes that looked borrowed from a colder, harsher world.

Her gray hoodie was torn at the drawstring.

The olive bomber jacket had dried blood on one sleeve.

A purple bruise darkened her left cheek, and her split lower lip had begun bleeding again.

Every guest stared at her as if poverty were contagious.

At the head of the table, Vivian Blackwood rose slowly in a black plunging dress that caught the chandelier light like polished armor.

Her geometric gold earrings swayed when she turned.

“Who let her in?” Vivian asked.

No one answered.

Rowan held up a brass key stamped with the Aurelia's circular sun logo.

“My mother gave me this before she disappeared.”

Vivian's face changed for less than a second.

Then the fear vanished beneath contempt.

“Your mother was a liar.”

“My mother was your sister.”

A director near the window dropped his fork.

Vivian walked around the table and stopped inches from Rowan.

“Elise died twenty-four years ago.”

“Then why did someone break into my apartment tonight looking for her files?”

Rowan placed a bloodstained envelope beside Vivian's plate.

Before anyone could touch it, Vivian snatched it and tore it in half.

Only a blank sheet fell out.

Rowan smiled through the pain.

“That was a copy.”

Vivian seized the collar of Rowan's jacket.

Her manicured fingers pressed against Rowan's throat.

“Don't you ever step foot in here again!” she screamed.

She dragged Rowan through the open salon doors and into the grand lobby.

Guests turned beneath three enormous crystal chandeliers.

The polished white marble reflected every movement.

At the security desk, Evan Wright froze with one hand above the alarm button.

His black uniform carried a silver name tag that read WRIGHT.

He had seen Rowan arrive twenty minutes earlier.

He had also seen two men follow her through the service entrance.

Vivian shoved Rowan with both hands.

Rowan flew backward and struck the marble floor in the center of the Aurelia's inlaid circular logo.

Pain flashed through her ribs.

The brass key skittered beneath a velvet bench.

Vivian stood over her, breathing hard.

“This hotel belongs to my family.”

Rowan touched her bleeding lip.

Around them, phones rose, but no one stepped closer.

Evan remained paralyzed.

Rowan saw his shame before he lowered his eyes.

Vivian leaned down.

“You are nobody.”

Rowan slowly planted one sneaker against the marble.

Then she pushed herself upright.

Her fear hardened into something colder than anger.

She stepped until her bruised face was inches from Vivian's flawless one.

“You just put your hands on the owner of this hotel,” Rowan whispered.

For the first time that evening, Vivian Blackwood had no answer.

Then every screen in the lobby went black.

White letters appeared across them.

EMERGENCY TRANSFER OF CONTROL ACTIVATED.
