Chapter 11 - The Daughter They Buried.

For several seconds, even the cables seemed silent.

Rowan stared at Marcus as if his face had become another locked door.

“You are lying.”

“Elise and I were together before Vivian learned about the missing pension money.”

Marcus gripped the side of the stalled elevator car.

“Conrad would have fired me if he knew.”

“Vivian promised to protect my career if I helped make Elise disappear.”

Evan's expression filled with disgust.

“So you chose a job over your child.”

“I chose fear.”

“Cowards always give fear a cleaner name.”

Rowan wanted to strike Marcus.

Instead, she forced herself to ask the question that mattered.

“Did you drive my mother's car off the bridge?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Rowan's breath broke.

“Thomas Wright was waiting in the river because I warned him.”

“I thought I could satisfy Vivian and save Elise at the same time.”

Evan seized Marcus by the lapels.

“Then you watched my father go to prison for it.”

“Vivian had photographs of me and Elise.”

“She threatened to tell Conrad that Thomas had planned the theft.”

“So you let an innocent man die.”

Marcus did not deny it.

The rooftop access alarm sounded above the shaft.

Rowan took the founder's key from Marcus while he was looking at Evan.

“You do not get to call yourself my father because the truth finally became useful.”

She climbed the maintenance ladder toward the roof.

Cold rain struck her bruised face when she pushed open the hatch.

The Aurelia's illuminated sign rose behind a forest of vents and steel pipes.

Elise sat in her wheelchair near the roof's edge.

Miriam knelt beside her with both hands bound.

A tall man in a charcoal coat held Daniel's handgun against Elise's temple.

The gold Meridian pin on his lapel caught the city lights.

Gideon Vale looked like an older, harder version of Marcus.

“The family reunion is complete,” Gideon said.

Marcus climbed onto the roof behind Rowan.

“Let them go.”

Gideon smiled.

“You always become brave after someone else pays the price.”

Miriam met Rowan's eyes.

“He used my recorded calls to imitate my voice.”

“The elevator message was not me.”

Gideon explained that Meridian Development had existed for twelve years behind layers of false directors.

The pension money financed its first purchases.

Vivian believed she had been hiding her theft through Marcus.

In reality, the Vale brothers had been building a company that could eventually buy the Aurelia itself.

“Tonight was supposed to end with Vivian blamed, Elise dead, and Rowan declared a fraud,” Gideon said.

“Then your little guard discovered a backup server.”

Evan moved slightly in front of Rowan.

Gideon pointed the weapon at him.

“Thomas Wright caused more trouble dead than he ever did alive.”

The ballroom clock began striking midnight below them.

One chime rolled through the rooftop speakers.

Then another.

Gideon extended his free hand.

“Give me Conrad's key.”

“The sale has already failed,” Rowan said.

“The sale was only one door.”

“The key opens the liquidation protocol beneath the lobby logo.”

“If the trust cannot verify an heir by 12:01, every Aurelia asset becomes available to its largest secured creditor.”

Meridian was that creditor.

Miriam shook her head urgently.

“He is lying about the protocol.”

Gideon pressed the gun harder against Elise.

The tenth chime sounded.

Marcus stepped forward.

“I have the key.”

Rowan felt the brass object inside her sleeve.

Marcus held up the replica.

Gideon ordered him to throw it across the roof.

Marcus obeyed.

Gideon caught the false key and looked down at it.

The eleventh chime sounded.

“Run,” Marcus shouted.

He charged his brother.

The gun fired.

Marcus fell against the roof ledge as the final chime began.
