Chapter 2 - The Name Beneath the Marble.

The message remained on the lobby screens for six seconds.

Then the Aurelia's golden welcome video returned as if nothing had happened.

Vivian laughed first.

It was a sharp, deliberate sound meant to tell the crowd what to believe.

“A childish stunt.”

Rowan did not look at the screens.

She watched the elevators.

The center doors opened, and Marcus Vale, the hotel's chief operating officer, stepped out with three board members behind him.

Marcus wore a navy suit and the expression of a man arriving at a fire he had started himself.

He hurried toward Vivian.

“The trust server rejected your credentials.”

Vivian's smile disappeared.

Marcus noticed Rowan and stopped.

“Who is she?”

“A trespasser.”

Rowan pulled a cracked phone from her jacket.

“My name is Rowan Elise Hale.”

The middle name landed harder than a shout.

One board member whispered Elise's name.

Marcus recovered quickly.

“Anyone can borrow a dead woman's name.”

Rowan opened a photograph on her phone.

It showed a younger Elise Blackwood standing beneath the same lobby chandeliers with one hand resting on her pregnant stomach.

Beside her stood Conrad Blackwood, the Aurelia's founder.

The brass key hung from Elise's neck.

“Conrad placed fifty-one percent of Aurelia Holdings in a dormant bloodline trust,” Rowan said.

“The trust was designed to activate if Elise returned or if a verified descendant entered this building with the founder's key.”

Vivian turned toward Marcus.

“Tell her that is impossible.”

Marcus said nothing.

Rowan saw the truth in his silence.

Vivian saw it too.

She crossed the lobby and slapped Marcus across the face.

The sound echoed from the marble pillars.

“You told me the trust had been dissolved.”

“I told you the records were incomplete.”

Rowan glanced toward the velvet bench.

The brass key was gone.

Evan stood behind the security desk with both hands below the counter.

His eyes met hers for a fraction of a second.

He had taken it.

Vivian pointed at Rowan.

“Call the police.”

Marcus hesitated.

“If the transfer is genuine, removing her could trigger a fiduciary lockdown.”

“Then call them for fraud.”

Evan reached for the desk phone.

Rowan walked toward him, keeping her face calm.

“Before you do that, ask Mrs. Blackwood why camera twelve was disabled at 8:41.”

Evan looked up.

Camera twelve covered the service corridor where Rowan had been attacked.

Only he and Marcus were supposed to know it had failed.

Marcus's voice dropped.

“How do you know about camera twelve?”

Rowan pulled back her sleeve.

A hotel laundry tag was clenched around her bruised wrist.

It carried a printed time, a camera number, and a five-digit employee code.

“Because one of the men who beat me dropped this.”

Vivian moved toward her.

Rowan raised the tag where the guests could see it.

The employee code belonged to the head of executive security.

Evan quietly pressed the silent alarm.

But the signal did not go to the police.

It opened a private channel installed by Conrad Blackwood decades earlier.

A voice crackled through his hidden earpiece.

“Mr. Wright, return the key to the heir.”

Evan's blood turned cold.

The voice belonged to a woman everyone believed was dead.
