Chapter 5 - A Camera Without a Memory.

The fire alarm screamed through the Aurelia Grand.

Guests spilled onto the sidewalk while firefighters rushed toward the service entrance.

Rowan and Evan climbed seventeen flights because every elevator had been disabled.

By the time they reached the executive floor, Rowan's bruised ribs felt like broken glass.

Room 1701 stood at the end of a silent hallway.

The brass key did not fit its lock.

Evan tried his master card.

The reader flashed red.

Rowan opened the encrypted drive on an emergency laptop mounted inside a housekeeping closet.

The file titled ROWAN'S BIRTH contained no video.

It held a scan of a hospital bracelet, a sealed DNA report, and a letter from Conrad Blackwood.

Rowan read the first sentence twice.

My granddaughter must never inherit the Aurelia alone.

Her hope twisted into confusion.

The letter said Conrad had discovered that both daughters were compromised.

Vivian had stolen from the employee pension fund.

Elise had signed papers helping her hide it.

The trust would give Rowan temporary control only long enough to expose the crime.

Permanent ownership would depend on a final condition stored in Room 1701.

“My mother helped Vivian?” Rowan asked.

Evan shook his head.

“A signature does not tell us why.”

The hallway camera rotated toward them.

Its red light blinked once.

Then the speaker above the door clicked.

“You should not have come here,” a woman whispered.

Rowan pressed both hands against the door.

“Mom, open it.”

No answer came.

Evan examined the brass key beneath the ceiling light.

A tiny piece on its stem moved under his thumbnail.

The key unfolded into two parts.

The hidden half fit the lock.

Room 1701 opened into a suite that appeared untouched for decades.

A child's wooden crib stood near the window.

An olive-green baby blanket lay folded inside it.

Rowan recognized the blanket from the only photograph she had of herself as an infant.

On the desk, nine screens showed live views from inside the hotel.

One showed Vivian in the lobby speaking to reporters.

One showed Marcus entering the boardroom.

One showed Daniel Cross climbing the stairs with a handgun.

The ninth screen was black.

Rowan searched the suite.

There was no woman inside.

Only a microphone, a voice modulator, and a timer connected to the private security channel.

The messages had been prerecorded.

Her mother had not spoken to her.

Someone had guided Rowan there using Elise's archived voice.

Evan found a fresh cup of tea beside the monitor.

Steam still rose from it.

“Someone was here less than a minute ago.”

The suite door slammed shut.

The lights died.

Daniel's footsteps stopped outside.

The black ninth screen turned on.

It showed Rowan and Evan standing in the dark suite from a camera directly above them.

White text appeared across the image.

ONE OF YOU IS WORKING FOR VIVIAN.

Evan slowly turned toward Rowan.

Rowan tightened her hand around the encrypted drive.

Then someone inside the room began to breathe.
