Chapter 3 - The Guard Who Did Nothing.

Evan kept his face blank while the voice repeated the order.
“Return the key to the heir.”
He ended the channel before Vivian noticed.
Two uniformed police officers entered through the revolving doors.
Vivian greeted them with the confidence of someone who had spent years turning authority into a personal servant.
“That woman assaulted me and attempted to extort this hotel.”
Rowan stared at her.
“You threw me to the floor in front of fifty witnesses.”
Vivian touched her own collarbone.
“She lunged at me.”
Several guests lowered their phones.
No one volunteered the recordings.
The first officer asked Evan to show the lobby footage.
He opened the security console.
The last ten minutes had vanished.
Only a gray block remained where the assault should have been.
Marcus stepped beside him.
“Technical failure?”
Evan could smell Vivian's perfume over his shoulder.
He understood the question beneath the question.
“The system shows a manual deletion.”
Vivian's eyes sharpened.
Evan entered the administrator log.
The deletion carried his own employee number.
His mouth went dry.
“I didn't do this.”
Vivian sighed as though betrayed.
“Officer, it appears my guard helped this woman stage the entire event.”
Rowan looked at Evan, and he expected accusation.
Instead, she asked one quiet question.
“Do you want to keep doing nothing?”
The words struck deeper than anger would have.
Evan remembered being seventeen and watching his father leave the Aurelia in handcuffs.
Thomas Wright had been chief of security the night Elise Blackwood disappeared.
He died in prison insisting he had been framed.
Evan had taken this job to find proof.
For five years, fear had kept him behind a desk.
He reached beneath the counter and placed the brass key in Rowan's palm.
“Camera twelve has a local backup,” he said.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Wright, stop talking.”
“The backup is on Floor Zero.”
One officer frowned.
“This building doesn't have a Floor Zero.”
“It does if you have the founder's key.”
The lobby lights flickered.
The elevators chimed at the same time.
Every door opened onto an empty car.
Evan moved beside Rowan.
“We have maybe three minutes before they lock the shafts.”
Vivian grabbed his arm.
“If you walk away from this desk, you will never work in this city again.”
Evan removed her hand.
“My father never worked again after you lied about him.”
For the first time, Vivian looked frightened of the guard she had never bothered to remember.
Rowan and Evan ran toward the service elevator.
Marcus shouted for the officers to stop them.
Rowan slid the brass key into a narrow slot beneath the call buttons.
A hidden symbol glowed inside the inlaid sun.
The elevator doors closed before the officers reached them.
There were no floor numbers inside.
Only a small speaker and a black glass panel.
The woman's voice returned.
“Rowan, if Vivian follows you, do not let her see the room at the end of the corridor.”
Rowan stopped breathing.
“Mom?”
The speaker went silent.
Then the elevator began descending beneath the hotel.
