Chapter 13 - The Door She Tried To Close.

Claire picked up the itinerary.

"You're leaving?"

Eleanor snatched it from her hand.

"I need space."

Daniel looked around the condominium.

Half the framed photographs had already been removed from the shelves.

Two suitcases stood near the bedroom hallway.

This was not an impulsive trip.

Eleanor had prepared to leave before asking Daniel to come for the box.

"Were you going to disappear with Dad's papers?" he asked.

"They're part of my life too."

Martin stepped in.

"Some items are specifically designated to Daniel."

Eleanor glared at him.

"I am aware."

Daniel closed James's box.

"Go to London if you want."

Claire looked at him in surprise.

Daniel continued.

"But you don't get to leave behind a version of the story where everyone else caused this."

Eleanor's mouth tightened.

"What do you want from me?"

The question sounded sincere for half a second.

Daniel answered immediately.

"Accountability."

"A public humiliation?"

"No."

"Then what?"

"Correct what you wrote about Lily."

Eleanor looked away.

"And return the money you took from the company through false invoices."

"I used it for family."

"You used some for Claire and some for Michael."

Daniel's voice remained even.

"Neither gave you permission to lie."

Claire stepped forward.

"I'll repay the twenty thousand you gave me."

Eleanor turned on her.

"After everything I have done for you?"

Claire flinched but did not back away.

"You helped me with money."

"That doesn't mean I owe you silence."

Eleanor looked suddenly smaller.

Her authority had always depended on people wanting her approval more than they wanted peace.

One by one, that bargain was failing.

Daniel took the box.

"There is one more thing."

Eleanor laughed without humor.

"Of course there is."

"Lily decides whether she wants contact with you for now."

Eleanor's face hardened again.

"She is seven."

"Which is why Rachel and I will protect the boundary."

"You're turning a child against me."

Daniel shook his head.

"You put a message inside her Christmas present."

Eleanor opened her mouth, then closed it.

"She made that ornament for you," Daniel said.

"She painted Grandpa James into the family because she still thinks love makes room."

For the first time, Eleanor looked genuinely shaken.

Daniel walked toward the door.

Claire followed.

Martin remained behind to discuss the financial records.

In the hallway, Daniel's phone rang.

It was Rachel.

He answered and heard Lily crying in the background.

"What's wrong?"

Rachel's voice was tense.

"Lily's school called."

Daniel stopped walking.

"Is she hurt?"

"No."

Rachel took a breath.

"Someone sent the school an anonymous complaint saying we're emotionally pressuring Lily to reject her biological identity."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire stared at him.

"What happened?"

Daniel looked back toward Eleanor's closed door.

"Someone just dragged Lily's school into this."

The condominium door opened again behind them.

Eleanor stood there, pale.

"I didn't do that."

Daniel studied her face.

May you like

For once, he believed her.

Which meant someone else had joined the fight.
