Chapter 3 - A Seat That Was Never Missing.

Daniel called Claire before sunrise.

She declined the first call.

She declined the second.

On the third attempt, she answered in a whisper.

"I said I would explain."

"Then explain."

Claire exhaled.

"Mom gave me the money."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Rachel was asleep upstairs with Lily, and the kitchen lights were the only lights on in the house.

"For what?"

"Noah's school tuition was behind."

Noah was Claire's twelve-year-old son.

Daniel loved him, but Claire and her boyfriend had made a series of expensive decisions while expecting Eleanor to solve the consequences.

"Why did she send me a fake repair invoice?"

"Because she knew you would say no if she told you the truth."

Daniel gripped the edge of the counter.

"So you both lied to me."

Claire's voice became defensive.

"You have money, Daniel."

"That is not an answer."

"Mom said you owed the family after spending so much on Lily's adoption and therapy."

Daniel went still.

"She said what?"

Claire realized too late what she had revealed.

"Forget I said that."

Daniel ended the call.

For three years, Lily had attended counseling to help with anxiety from the instability she experienced before joining Daniel and Rachel's home.

Daniel had never discussed those bills with Eleanor.

He had never asked the family to contribute one dollar.

Yet Eleanor had apparently turned Lily's care into an argument that Daniel was somehow taking resources away from people related to him by blood.

By eight that morning, Daniel had canceled the automatic monthly transfer to Eleanor.

He did not touch her personal accounts.

He did not threaten her housing.

He simply stopped paying discretionary expenses that were never his legal responsibility.

Then he emailed the building manager and asked for copies of all authorized work orders from the previous twelve months.

Rachel read the message over his shoulder.

"You're expecting more fake invoices."

"I'm hoping I'm wrong."

At breakfast, Lily barely touched her pancakes.

The green present sat on the counter.

Daniel noticed her watching it.

"Do you want to open it with us?"

Lily shook her head.

"It belongs to Grandma."

"Even after what happened?"

Lily nodded.

"I made it before she was mean."

The simplicity of that answer hurt more than Daniel expected.

Later that morning, the doorbell rang.

Claire stood outside with Noah.

Daniel almost told her to leave.

Then Noah saw Lily behind him and lifted a small red gift bag.

"This is for Lily," he said.

Lily hesitated.

Noah stepped inside.

"Grandma told me you ruined dinner," he said.

Claire's face drained of color.

Daniel's expression tightened.

Noah continued before anyone could stop him.

"But Grandma told me last week that you weren't supposed to sit with us anyway."

Silence filled the foyer.

Lily stared at him.

Daniel looked at Claire.

"Last week?"

Claire shook her head.

"I didn't know that."

Noah frowned.

"She even moved Lily's place card before everyone came."

Rachel stepped closer.

"So this wasn't an argument during dinner."

Daniel looked toward the green present on the kitchen counter.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"It was planned."

Claire sat down heavily on the bench by the door.

Then Noah added one more detail.

"Grandma took a picture of the empty chair before dinner started."
