Chapter 8 - The Reason We Chose Lily.

Rachel read Eleanor's note and became very still.

"She wants you frightened."

Daniel folded the paper.

"It almost worked."

There was only one part of Lily's adoption story they had not yet explained in full because she was seven.

Before meeting Lily, Daniel and Rachel had experienced years of infertility treatments and a pregnancy loss.

They eventually stopped trying to build a family according to one specific picture.

Months later, Rachel met Lily through a licensed foster-to-adopt program where Rachel volunteered at a family reading event.

Lily was three years old, suspicious of adults, and completely uninterested in being charming.

She corrected Daniel when he read a fox book wrong.

She refused Rachel's cookie because it had raisins.

She asked whether their house had night-lights.

Daniel loved her before he admitted it to himself.

Eleanor knew the earlier history.

She had always framed it cruelly.

She claimed Daniel and Rachel chose adoption only because biology had disappointed them.

To Eleanor, that made Lily second choice.

To Daniel, it meant the opposite.

They had stopped chasing an imagined child and learned to see the child standing in front of them.

Still, he did not want Eleanor explaining any of this to Lily as a weapon.

That night, Daniel and Rachel spoke with Lily together.

They kept the explanation simple and truthful.

"Before we met you, we thought becoming parents would happen one way," Rachel said.

"It didn't."

Lily watched them closely.

Daniel continued.

"Then we met you."

"Did you pick me because you couldn't have another kid?" Lily asked.

The question was painful because it sounded like Eleanor's voice translated into a child's fear.

Daniel moved closer.

"No."

"We became your parents because we loved you and because, over time, you chose us too."

Lily looked at Rachel.

"Was I the backup plan?"

Rachel's eyes filled.

"You were never a plan."

She smiled through the emotion.

"You were Lily."

The child considered that.

Then she climbed into the space between them on the couch.

"Grandma said real families don't have to choose."

Daniel felt his anger return.

"Real families choose each other all the time."

Lily leaned against him.

"Even when they're already related?"

"Especially then."

The next afternoon, Daniel and Rachel went to Eleanor's attorney's office.

Claire insisted on coming.

Eleanor sat at the end of a polished conference table with her attorney, Martin Wells.

She looked composed in a cream suit.

"Where is Lily?"

Daniel sat down.

"Safe."

Eleanor's mouth tightened.

Martin began by explaining that Eleanor wanted to clarify family finances and avoid further conflict.

Daniel placed copies of the false invoices on the table.

"Excellent idea."

Eleanor's composure cracked for half a second.

Daniel added the maintenance records.

Then the ledger photographs.

Then James's unfinished letter.

Eleanor stared at the final page.

Her face lost color.

Claire looked directly at her mother.

"Dad raised Daniel knowing the truth."

Eleanor whispered, "That letter was private."

Daniel answered quietly.

"So was my life."

Martin removed his glasses.

"Eleanor, is there something you failed to tell me?"

She looked around the table and realized her attorney had not known about Michael either.

Then the conference room door opened.

A receptionist stepped inside.

"Mrs. Hart, there's a gentleman here asking for you."

May you like

She glanced at her clipboard.

"Michael Hale."
