Chapter 9 - The Man In The Photograph.

Eleanor stood so quickly that her chair struck the wall.

"He cannot be here."

Martin looked from her to Daniel.

"Do you know this man?"

Daniel answered before Eleanor could.

"Apparently, he is my biological father."

The room changed.

Claire stared at the door.

Rachel reached for Daniel's hand beneath the table.

Martin asked the receptionist to have Michael wait outside while he spoke privately with his client.

Eleanor refused.

"No."

Her voice trembled for the first time.

"If Daniel wants truth, let him have all of it."

Michael Hale entered a minute later.

He was in his late sixties, lean, silver-haired, and dressed in a simple dark coat.

Daniel recognized his eyes immediately because he saw them every morning in the mirror.

Michael did not attempt to hug him.

He did not call him son.

He simply said, "Hello, Daniel."

Daniel nodded once.

"Why are you here?"

Michael looked at Eleanor.

"Because she stopped paying me."

Claire made a disgusted sound.

Michael raised one hand.

"Not for what you think."

He opened a worn leather folder.

For years, Eleanor had sent him money under an agreement created after James discovered the affair.

The agreement did not buy Michael's silence about Daniel's paternity.

James already knew.

It paid Michael to stay away because Michael had struggled with gambling debt and repeatedly asked Eleanor for money when Daniel was young.

James wanted stability for the children.

Michael accepted.

Years later, after James died, Eleanor quietly began using Daniel's reimbursements to continue the payments rather than her own funds.

Daniel stared at him.

"Why come now?"

Michael's expression was tired.

"Because the last transfer included a note telling me never to contact her again."

"So you decided to contact her attorney instead?"

"I decided to return something."

Michael placed a small sealed envelope on the table.

Inside was the latest thirty-five-thousand-dollar cashier's check.

It had never been deposited.

"I don't want it anymore."

Eleanor laughed bitterly.

"How noble."

Michael ignored her.

He looked at Daniel.

"James was your father."

Daniel's throat tightened.

"I know."

"He was better at it than I would have been."

The admission held no excuse.

That made it harder to dismiss.

Martin cleared his throat.

"This financial arrangement does not justify false reimbursement requests."

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

"You are enjoying this."

Daniel felt suddenly exhausted.

"No."

"You wanted to humiliate me because of that girl."

Rachel's chair moved back.

Daniel touched her wrist, asking her to wait.

"Her name is Lily."

Eleanor's eyes sharpened.

"And none of this changes what she is."

Michael looked genuinely confused.

"What did you say to the child?"

Claire told him.

Michael's expression changed from confusion to disbelief.

Then he looked at Eleanor.

"James raised another man's son as his own, and you're lecturing a seven-year-old about blood?"

No one spoke.

Eleanor gathered her handbag.

"This meeting is over."

Daniel stood too.

"Not quite."

He slid one final document across the table.

It was not an eviction notice.

It was a written termination of Eleanor's authority to submit any expense or reimbursement through the family company.

Her access ended immediately.

Eleanor looked at the paper.

Then she smiled.

"You think money is your leverage."

May you like

She leaned closer.

"You haven't seen mine yet."
