Chapter 6 - The Name No One Used.

Daniel photographed the ledger and returned it exactly where they had found it.
He did not want Eleanor to know how much he knew.
Rachel studied the old photograph again.
The man beside Eleanor was tall, gray-eyed, and younger than Daniel's father had been at the time.
"Do you recognize him?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
The name Michael meant nothing to him.
On the drive home, Rachel asked the question both of them had avoided.
"Do you think this has something to do with you?"
Daniel stared through the windshield.
"I don't know."
"The payment says silence."
"I know."
Daniel's father, James Hart, had died four years earlier after a brief illness.
He had been steady, practical, and unusually patient with Eleanor's sharp edges.
He was also the person who welcomed Lily most openly when Daniel and Rachel first brought her home.
James never called her adopted granddaughter.
He called her his granddaughter.
When Lily was four, James built a small wooden step so she could reach the kitchen counter and help him make pancakes.
That step still sat in Daniel's pantry.
Eleanor had always dismissed his attachment as sentimentality.
Daniel suddenly wondered whether his father had known about Michael.
At home, Claire was waiting.
"Mom came by," she said.
Daniel stopped.
"She came here?"
"She stayed on the porch."
Rachel looked toward Lily.
"Did Lily see her?"
"No."
Claire handed Daniel an envelope.
"She told me to give you this."
Inside was a copy of a letter signed by Eleanor.
It stated that Daniel's financial support had been voluntary and that any attempt to accuse her of misuse would be treated as harassment.
Daniel almost laughed.
"She wrote a defense before I accused her of anything."
Claire looked nervous.
"There's more."
She opened her own phone and showed Daniel a message from Eleanor.
If Daniel continued digging into old family matters, Eleanor would reveal something that could change Lily's opinion of him forever.
Rachel read the message twice.
"What could she possibly mean?"
Daniel's mind went to the adoption process.
There had been nothing improper.
They had followed every requirement, attended every meeting, completed every evaluation, and waited through months of uncertainty.
Lily knew age-appropriate details about her early life.
They had never lied to her.
Still, Eleanor's confidence disturbed him.
That evening, Daniel searched through his father's old digital files.
James had left thousands of scanned documents organized with obsessive precision.
Tax records.
Insurance policies.
Letters.
Family photographs.
Near midnight, Daniel found a folder labeled M.H.
It contained only one document.
A scanned check from James to someone named Michael Hale.
The check was twenty years old.
The memo line said CONSULTING.
Daniel searched the name online but found several people with no obvious connection.
Then Rachel noticed the address printed on the old check image.
It was in Providence, Rhode Island.
She searched the address instead.
The property had once belonged to a private adoption attorney.
Daniel felt the room tilt beneath him.
His own birth certificate was from Providence.
Rachel looked at him carefully.
"Daniel..."
He opened the next file in his father's archive.
It was a letter James had written but never sent.

The first line read:
"If Daniel ever asks why blood mattered so much to Eleanor, tell him the truth about the day we brought him home."
