Chapter 10 - The Voice That Wore His Name.

The courtroom seemed to contract around Alexander.
He knew his own voice.
He knew the cadence, the slight roughness on certain consonants, the way he said Sophie's name.
The recording sounded real.
Naomi leaned toward him.
"Did you ever say that sentence?"
"No."
"Anything close to it?"
Alexander searched his memory.
Three years earlier, during the worst weeks of the Singapore project, he had left hundreds of voice messages for Margaret, Claire, executives, contractors, and lawyers.
He had complained about Claire not responding.
He had said he did not understand what was happening.
He had once told Margaret he was worried Claire was not thinking clearly because every message he received through his mother described erratic behavior.
But he had never said Claire could not be trusted with Sophie.
"No."
Naomi stood.
"Your Honor, we dispute the authenticity and context of this audio."
Margaret's attorney, Leonard Shaw, raised a hand.
"It was produced from Hale family records and submitted with the original police report three years ago."
Judge Miriam Cole looked at Alexander.
"Mr. Hale, are you claiming the voice is not yours?"
Alexander chose his words carefully.
"I'm claiming I never made that statement."
Shaw almost smiled.
"Those are not the same thing."
Alexander looked at him.
"They are when someone edits audio."
Naomi requested the original file metadata and time to conduct forensic analysis.
Judge Cole granted a two-hour recess but made clear she would not postpone the emergency custody question indefinitely.
Outside the courtroom, Alexander exploded.
"How many versions of me did she manufacture?"
Naomi did not answer because there was no useful answer.
A forensic audio specialist joined them remotely and requested every available copy of the recording.
The police department produced the original file from its archive.
The specialist began analysis.
Sophie sat on a bench eating crackers from a paper cup.
Alexander watched her.
She watched Margaret at the far end of the hall.
"Daddy?"
"Yeah?"
"Why does Grandma want me?"
Alexander sat beside her.
"I don't think this is really about wanting you."
Sophie frowned.
"Then why?"
He hated the answer.
"Because keeping control matters to her."
Sophie considered that.
"Mommy says people who love you don't make you scared on purpose."
Alexander looked at her.
"Your mommy is right."
Sophie glanced again at Margaret.
"Grandma always said being scared made me behave."
Alexander's chest tightened.
"Did she scare you often?"
Sophie looked down at her crackers.
"Only when Mommy came to ask for money."
"What did she do?"
Sophie whispered.
"She put me in the blue room."
Alexander frowned.
"What blue room?"
"At Mr. David's office."
Naomi, standing nearby, turned immediately.
"Mercer's office?"
Sophie nodded.
"There was a camera in the corner."
Alexander's heart kicked.
"How do you know?"
"A red light blinked."
Naomi pulled out her phone and called Agent Ross.
"Get a warrant for Mercer's office video systems if you don't already have one."
She listened.
"Yes, specifically a room a child describes as blue."
Margaret saw them talking.
Her calm expression vanished for half a second.
Alexander noticed.
So did Naomi.
"She knows."
Alexander said.
"Good."
Naomi's eyes stayed on Margaret.
"Fear makes careful people make mistakes."
At noon, the audio specialist called.
"The recording is manipulated."
Alexander closed his eyes.
"Can you prove it?"
"Yes."
The specialist shared a waveform.
"The phrase is assembled from at least four different source recordings."
He identified unnatural background noise transitions between words.
"Whoever did this had access to a large library of Mr. Hale's recorded speech."
Naomi looked at Alexander.
"Your family office recorded calls?"
Alexander nodded slowly.
"Compliance archive."
"Who controlled it?"
He already knew.
"David Mercer had legal access."
When court resumed, Naomi dismantled the recording in less than fifteen minutes.
She presented the expert's preliminary analysis and requested sanctions for submitting manipulated evidence.
Shaw claimed he had received the file in good faith.
Judge Cole's patience visibly thinned.
Then Naomi played part of the cellar recording.
Margaret's own voice filled the courtroom.
"You have ten minutes, Claire."
The judge listened without interruption.
When the recording ended, Margaret finally looked uncertain.
Judge Cole removed her glasses.
"Mrs. Hale, did you make that statement?"
Margaret looked at her attorney.
"On advice of counsel, I decline to answer."
The judge's expression hardened.
"This is family court, not a television drama."
Naomi requested dismissal of the custody petition and an immediate protective order preventing Margaret from contacting Sophie.
Judge Cole began speaking.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
Special Agent Ross entered with another agent.
He walked directly to Naomi and whispered something.
Naomi's face changed.
Alexander stood.
"What happened?"
Ross looked at the judge.
"Your Honor, federal investigators have just executed a search warrant at David Mercer's office."
Judge Cole waited.
Ross continued.
"We located the room described by the child."
Margaret's hand tightened around the edge of the table.
"The camera system was still operating."
Alexander's heart began pounding.
Ross looked at him.
"The recordings go back four years."
May you like
Then he turned toward Margaret.
"And one of them shows exactly what happened the night Claire Hale signed away her rights."
