Chapter 9 - The Morning They Tried to Take Sophie.

At six thirty in the morning, Sophie was asleep in a chair beside Claire's bed while three lawyers argued quietly in the hallway about whether a grandmother with forged documents could still obtain an emergency custody order before the forgery was formally established.

Alexander discovered that rage was useless against procedure.

Margaret understood procedure better than rage.

That was why she had survived so long.

Naomi ended a phone call and returned to the room.

"Family court set a hearing for ten."

Alexander stared at her.

"Today?"

"Emergency petition."

"My mother is under federal investigation."

"Not formally charged."

"She stole Sophie's money."

"We can show suspicious transfers."

"She forged my signature."

"We can show you deny signing it."

Alexander's voice rose.

"She threatened Claire."

Naomi held his gaze.

"And we can play the recording if the judge allows it."

Claire spoke from the bed.

"She planned this."

Everyone looked at her.

"Margaret knew one day Alexander might come back."

Claire's face was pale but focused.

"She built paperwork for every possible version of the story."

Alexander remembered the labeled folders in the red safe.

Claire was right.

Margaret had not merely lied.

She had constructed alternate realities in advance.

At seven fifteen, Special Agent Ross entered.

"We located Mercer at his lake residence."

Alexander stood.

"And my mother?"

"She wasn't there."

"Where is Mercer now?"

"Being interviewed."

Naomi watched Ross carefully.

"Voluntarily?"

"For the moment."

Ross looked at Claire.

"We may need a formal statement when you're medically stable."

Claire nodded.

"I'll give one today."

Dr. Ruiz, standing near the doorway, shook her head.

"No."

Claire looked annoyed.

"Doctor—"

"You have pneumonia, not a scheduling conflict."

Alexander almost smiled despite everything.

Claire did not.

"If I wait, Margaret will use the delay."

Ross said, "A recorded statement can be taken here with medical approval."

Dr. Ruiz sighed.

"Twenty minutes."

At eight o'clock, Alexander joined the Hale Holdings board meeting by secure video from a hospital conference room.

Eleven directors appeared on the screen.

Margaret occupied the largest window.

She was no longer wearing the gold gown.

She wore a gray suit, pearl earrings, and the expression of a grieving mother forced to make a difficult decision.

Alexander almost admired the speed of the transformation.

Margaret began before he could speak.

"My son experienced a severe emotional event last night."

Alexander leaned back.

"You mean I found my starving daughter outside your birthday party."

Several directors shifted.

Margaret continued as if he had not spoken.

"He has since removed staff, disrupted charitable operations, threatened corporate officers, and transferred confidential records to outside counsel."

Naomi muted Alexander's microphone.

"Let her talk."

He glared at her.

"Why?"

"Because every lie is discoverable later."

Margaret displayed the psychiatric evaluation signed by Simon Vale.

"We have professional concern regarding Alexander's judgment."

Alexander unmuted.

"I have never met Dr. Vale."

Silence.

Margaret's expression did not move.

"That is not my understanding."

"Then your understanding is fraudulent."

One director, James Chen, leaned forward.

"Margaret, is the doctor available to confirm the examination?"

"He is temporarily unavailable."

Alexander almost laughed.

"Because federal agents are questioning him downstairs."

The board erupted.

Margaret's face finally changed.

Alexander continued.

"I am sending every director a copy of the bank transfer showing $180,000 intended for my daughter moved into the Hale Heritage Foundation."

Naomi sent the file.

"I am also sending evidence that the foundation paid seventy-four thousand dollars toward last night's birthday event."

Margaret snapped.

"Those expenses were legitimate donor cultivation."

James Chen looked stunned.

"At your birthday?"

"The event raised money."

Alexander leaned toward the camera.

"My daughter was outside eating discarded bread while a children's charity paid for champagne."

No one spoke.

The vote to suspend Alexander never happened.

Instead, by nine fifteen, the board voted eight to three to place Margaret on administrative leave from all Hale Holdings and foundation roles pending independent investigation.

Margaret stared into the camera.

"You think this is victory?"

Alexander answered quietly.

"No."

"Good."

She smiled faintly.

"Because your custody hearing starts in forty-five minutes."

The screen went black.

At ten o'clock, Alexander entered family court with Sophie holding one hand and Naomi walking on the other side.

Claire participated by video from the hospital.

Margaret sat at the opposite table beside a new attorney.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

The judge reviewed the emergency petition.

Naomi presented the forged psychiatric evaluation.

Margaret's attorney presented a second document.

A police report from three years earlier.

It stated that Alexander himself had reported Claire for taking Sophie without permission.

Alexander stared at the signature line.

His name appeared again.

Then the attorney played a voicemail.

Alexander's own voice filled the courtroom.

"Claire cannot be trusted with Sophie."

May you like

Alexander stopped breathing.

The voice was unmistakably his.
