Chapter 8 - The Order Given at Midnight.

For several seconds, Alexander could not understand what he had heard.

His mind rejected the sentence because accepting it meant crossing a line from corruption into something darker.

Naomi did not hesitate.

"Call the hospital."

Alexander was already dialing.

Dr. Ruiz answered from the nurses' station.

"Mr. Hale?"

"Do not let anyone near Claire without identification."

The urgency in his voice changed the doctor's tone instantly.

"What happened?"

"Someone may try to harm her."

There was a pause.

"I'm alerting hospital security now."

Alexander grabbed Sophie's coat.

"We're leaving."

Naomi held up a hand.

"I am sending the recording to federal investigators."

"Do it from the car."

They were halfway across the ballroom when Alexander's phone rang again.

It was Dr. Ruiz.

"Someone just arrived asking for Claire."

Alexander stopped walking.

"Who?"

"A man claiming to be a private physician retained by the Hale family."

Alexander's skin went cold.

"Do not let him in."

"Security has him downstairs."

"Name?"

The doctor covered the phone briefly.

Then she returned.

"Dr. Simon Vale."

Naomi heard the name and opened her laptop while walking.

"Medical license is active."

She typed rapidly.

"Private concierge practice."

Another search.

"And his largest corporate client is Hale Heritage Foundation."

Alexander looked at Edmund.

"My mother sent a doctor to Claire's room after telling Mercer to keep her from testifying."

Edmund's face was white.

"Yes, sir."

Sophie looked up.

"Is Mommy safe?"

Alexander knelt in front of her.

He forced his voice to remain calm.

"Mommy is surrounded by people protecting her."

"Are we going back?"

"Right now."

The moment they reached the front entrance, two black sedans turned into the circular drive.

Alexander stopped.

Four men in dark suits stepped out.

One displayed a badge.

"Alexander Hale?"

Naomi moved slightly in front of him.

"Identify your agency."

"Federal Bureau of Investigation."

The agent showed credentials more carefully.

"Special Agent Daniel Ross."

Naomi verified the badge number through a contact before allowing the conversation to continue.

Ross looked toward the forensic team inside.

"Ms. Price sent us an audio file that creates an immediate concern."

Alexander held Sophie tighter.

"My wife is at St. Anne's."

"We already have agents headed there."

"My mother is with David Mercer."

"Do you know where?"

"No."

Edmund spoke.

"I may."

Everyone turned.

"Mr. Mercer owns a private residence on Lake Arden."

Alexander knew the property.

He had attended summer dinners there as a teenager.

Ross gave orders to another agent.

Then he looked at Alexander.

"You need to stay available."

"I'm going to my wife."

"We can meet you at the hospital."

The drive back felt longer than the first.

When they reached St. Anne's, two federal agents stood near the entrance.

Dr. Simon Vale was sitting in a security office with a lawyer already on speakerphone.

Alexander ignored him and went straight upstairs.

Claire was awake.

The moment Sophie ran into the room, Claire pulled her close.

"What happened?"

Alexander closed the door.

"We found the red box."

Claire's eyes widened.

"You found it?"

"And the recorder."

She looked at his face.

"What was on it?"

Alexander hesitated.

Claire saw the answer before he spoke.

"Tell me."

"My mother told Mercer to make sure you didn't get healthy enough to testify."

Claire went completely still.

Sophie looked between them.

"What does testify mean?"

Claire kissed her hair.

"It means telling the truth to a judge."

Sophie nodded.

"Mommy is good at truth."

Claire closed her eyes.

Alexander turned away because the simple faith in Sophie's voice was unbearable.

Naomi entered several minutes later.

"Federal agents are taking custody of the evidence from the estate."

Alexander nodded.

"And Vale?"

"He says Margaret asked him to evaluate Claire for transfer to a private facility."

Claire stared at her.

"Transfer me?"

"He claims he knew nothing about any threat."

Naomi's expression made clear how little she believed coincidence.

"Can they arrest Margaret?"

Alexander asked.

"Not yet."

"We have the recording."

"We have a statement that sounds sinister, but context matters legally."

Naomi folded her arms.

"We need the full chain."

Claire looked exhausted.

"She always survives because everyone needs one more piece of proof."

Naomi met her eyes.

"Then we get one more piece."

Alexander's phone buzzed.

A notification from Hale Holdings appeared.

EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING - 8:00 A.M.

He opened it.

The meeting had been requested by Margaret Hale and David Mercer.

Agenda item one read:

TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF CHIEF EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY DUE TO PERSONAL INSTABILITY AND POTENTIAL MISUSE OF CORPORATE RESOURCES.

Alexander stared at the screen.

Naomi read over his shoulder.

"She's moving against you before sunrise."

Another notification appeared.

This one was from family court.

An emergency petition had been filed electronically.

Margaret Hale was seeking temporary custody of Sophie.

Her stated reason was even worse.

She alleged Claire was medically incapacitated and Alexander presented an immediate emotional danger to the child.

Attached was a psychiatric evaluation.

Alexander opened the document.

The doctor's signature at the bottom belonged to Simon Vale.

The evaluation claimed he had examined Alexander three weeks earlier.

Alexander had never met him in his life.
