Chapter 7 - The Red Box Beneath the House.

Alexander did not want to leave Claire.

Claire did not want him staying.

That contradiction filled the hospital room until Naomi Price arrived just after one in the morning carrying a laptop, a legal pad, and the expression of a woman who considered sleep an optional weakness.

She reviewed the forged guardianship document first.

Then the offshore transfer.

Then Claire's coerced waiver.

By the time she finished, her voice was flat.

"This is not family drama."

Alexander nodded.

"I know."

"This is potentially a criminal enterprise built inside a family office."

Claire watched her carefully.

"Can you prove it?"

Naomi looked at the brass key hanging from Sophie's neck.

"Maybe your daughter can."

Claire immediately tensed.

"She is not being dragged into court."

"Agreed."

Naomi closed the folder.

"But evidence she already possesses matters."

Alexander crouched beside Sophie.

"Sweetheart, do you know what the key opens?"

Sophie nodded.

"The red door."

Edmund frowned.

"There is no red door in the cellar."

Sophie looked at him.

"Not the big door."

She held her hands close together.

"The little one behind the bottles."

Edmund's expression changed.

"The document safe."

Alexander stood.

"We're going back."

Claire grabbed his wrist.

Her grip was weak but urgent.

"No police from your mother's circle."

Alexander looked at her.

"Naomi will arrange independent officers."

"And Sophie stays with me."

Sophie immediately shook her head.

"I want Daddy."

Claire's face tightened with pain that had nothing to do with pneumonia.

Alexander saw it.

"I won't take her anywhere you don't approve."

Claire looked at him for several seconds.

Then she looked at Sophie.

"You come straight back."

Sophie nodded solemnly.

"Straight back."

Naomi arranged for two off-duty investigators from a private forensic firm to meet them at the estate.

Their job was not to search freely but to photograph, catalog, and preserve anything Alexander lawfully controlled as the property’s corporate owner.

When they returned to the Hale mansion, most guests were gone.

The ballroom looked like the remains of an abandoned wedding.

Half-full champagne glasses stood beside wilting roses.

The birthday cake remained untouched.

Margaret was nowhere in sight.

"Where is she?"

Alexander asked the security supervisor.

The man looked uncomfortable.

"Mrs. Hale left twenty minutes ago."

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

"I ordered her access restricted."

"Her personal driver took her."

"To where?"

"We don't know."

Naomi looked at Alexander.

"Assume Mercer."

They moved quickly toward the service stairs.

Sophie held Alexander's hand as they descended into the old cellar.

The air became cooler with each step.

Rows of expensive wine disappeared into darkness beneath low stone arches.

Edmund led them to the far wall.

He moved several dusty bottles aside and pressed against a wooden panel.

Nothing happened.

Sophie stepped forward.

"Lower."

She pointed.

Edmund crouched and found a narrow seam near the floor.

The panel opened.

Behind it was a small red-painted steel door no larger than a suitcase.

Sophie removed the key from her neck.

Her hand trembled.

Alexander covered it with his own.

"You don't have to do this."

"Mommy said the truth was in here."

Together, they turned the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a red document box, a portable hard drive, three flash drives, and a digital voice recorder.

Naomi exhaled slowly.

"Nobody touches anything until it's photographed."

The forensic investigators documented the safe.

Then Alexander watched as they placed the contents on a clean evidence cloth.

The first folder contained bank records.

The second contained copies of letters Claire had sent Alexander over three years.

Every one was stamped RECEIVED by the Hale family office.

Alexander felt his throat close.

"She wrote back."

Edmund looked devastated.

"Yes, sir."

There were forty-three letters.

Some included photographs of Sophie.

One envelope contained a child's drawing of three people holding hands beneath a blue sky.

Above them, in uneven letters, Sophie had written MOMMY DADDY ME.

Alexander turned away.

Naomi examined the hard drive label.

"Accounting archive."

The forensic technician connected it to an isolated laptop.

A directory appeared.

Foundation.

Family Trust.

Mercer.

Claire.

Alexander.

Naomi's eyebrows rose.

"Your mother organizes her crimes beautifully."

They opened the Claire folder.

It contained scanned identification documents, bank forms, copies of Claire's signature, and a spreadsheet tracking payments.

Most of the payments did not go to Claire.

They went to consulting companies Alexander had never heard of.

One company appeared repeatedly.

Northstar Advisory LLC.

Naomi searched the corporate database through her secure system.

"Registered agent is Mercer Legal Services."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"Of course."

The voice recorder sat untouched at the edge of the cloth.

Sophie pointed to it.

"That's Grandma's."

Alexander looked at her.

"How do you know?"

"She put it on the desk when Mommy came."

Naomi turned toward the technician.

"Image the device before playback."

Five minutes later, a copy was ready.

The technician opened the newest audio file.

Margaret's voice filled the stone cellar.

"You have ten minutes, Claire."

Claire's younger voice answered, shaking with anger.

"You cannot take my daughter."

"I can do anything a court believes is in her best interest."

"Alexander will never allow this."

Margaret laughed softly on the recording.

"Alexander allowed it three years ago."

There was the sound of paper sliding across a desk.

"Sign."

Claire's voice broke.

"Let me see Sophie first."

"Sign."

The recording stopped.

No one spoke.

Alexander felt Sophie's hand tightening around his fingers.

Then the forensic technician frowned at the laptop.

"There's another audio file."

Naomi looked over.

"Date?"

"Tonight."

Alexander's blood went cold.

"Tonight?"

The technician clicked it.

David Mercer's voice came through first.

"If Alexander has the folder, we have a problem."

May you like

Margaret answered.

"Then make sure Claire never gets healthy enough to testify."
