Chapter 11 - The Blue Room.

The judge did not allow the video to be played immediately.

Chain of custody had to be established.

The file had to be copied by investigators.

Counsel had to receive access.

Even truth, Alexander learned, had to wait its turn in court.

Margaret sat twenty feet away with her hands folded neatly on the table.

She no longer looked calm.

She looked furious that procedure had failed to protect her from consequence.

Judge Cole dismissed the emergency custody petition before seeing the recording.

The forged psychiatric report, manipulated audio, and cellar recording were already enough for her to find Margaret's claims unreliable.

She issued a temporary protective order prohibiting Margaret from contacting Sophie or Claire.

Alexander should have felt relief.

Instead, he watched his mother leave the courtroom and wondered what else she had prepared.

Agent Ross asked Alexander and Naomi to meet investigators at a federal field office rather than view the video in a courthouse hallway.

Claire watched remotely from the hospital.

Sophie remained with a child advocate in a nearby room, drawing pictures and eating apple slices.

Alexander insisted she not see the recording.

No one objected.

At two thirty, Ross placed a laptop on a conference table.

"The footage is time-stamped sixteen months ago."

He looked at Claire on the video screen.

"Mrs. Hale, you can stop this at any point."

Claire nodded.

"Play it."

The image showed a small room painted pale blue.

There was a couch, a table, two chairs, and a framed landscape print on the wall.

Sophie, four years old at the time, sat alone on the couch clutching a stuffed rabbit.

Alexander covered his mouth.

The child looked tiny.

She kept glancing toward the closed door.

A minute passed.

Then Margaret entered.

She crouched in front of Sophie.

Even without perfect audio, every word was clear.

"Your mother is making a bad choice."

Little Sophie shook her head.

"Mommy wants me."

"Your mother wants money."

"No."

Margaret's expression hardened.

"If she does not sign the papers, police officers will take her away."

Sophie began to cry.

Alexander's fingernails dug into his palm.

On the screen, Margaret continued.

"Do you want your mother to go to jail?"

Sophie shook her head violently.

"Then when she comes in, you tell her you want to go home."

"Our home?"

"My home."

Sophie whispered, "I want Mommy."

Margaret stood.

"Then behave."

The door opened several minutes later.

Claire entered with David Mercer behind her.

She looked exhausted and terrified.

She immediately crossed the room and grabbed Sophie.

"Are you okay?"

Sophie buried her face in her mother's coat.

Mercer placed papers on the table.

"Sign where indicated."

Claire turned on him.

"I want a lawyer."

"You were offered time to obtain counsel."

"You gave me ten minutes."

Margaret entered behind him.

"Nine now."

Claire stared at her.

"Alexander will find out."

Margaret smiled.

"Alexander believes you disappeared with his child."

"He would never believe that."

Mercer placed a phone on the table and played the manipulated recording.

Alexander's manufactured voice said Claire could not be trusted with Sophie.

Claire's face collapsed.

Alexander stopped the video.

He stood so suddenly the chair fell backward.

"I need a minute."

No one stopped him.

He walked into the hallway and pressed both hands against the wall.

For three years, Claire had not merely believed he abandoned her.

She had heard his voice do it.

Every time he wondered why she had not fought harder to contact him, there was now an answer.

They had built a version of Alexander that betrayed her on command.

Naomi came into the hallway.

"You didn't do this."

Alexander stared at the floor.

"I left enough of myself behind for them to build it."

"That's guilt talking."

"It's responsibility."

He looked at her.

"I gave Mercer access to my calls."

"For corporate compliance."

"I gave my mother control over my personal correspondence."

"Because you trusted her."

"I stayed away when my wife stopped answering."

Naomi did not soften the truth.

"That part is yours."

Alexander nodded.

"I know."

They returned to the conference room.

The video resumed.

Claire finally signed the waiver while Sophie cried in her lap.

Mercer took the pages.

Margaret took Sophie's face in both hands.

"Now your mommy has made the right choice."

Claire slapped Margaret's hands away.

"Don't touch her."

Margaret stepped back.

"You will leave the city."

"No."

"Then next time, I keep her."

Claire's expression changed.

"If you come near us again, I'll expose you."

Margaret smiled.

"To whom?"

The recording ended.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Ross closed the laptop.

"There are more files."

Claire looked at him.

"More of what?"

"Meetings."

Ross turned to Alexander.

"Payments to Mercer."

"Conversations about the foundation."

"Discussions about creating the offshore account in Claire's name."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"Enough to charge them?"

Ross chose his words carefully.

"Enough to move very quickly."

His phone rang.

He answered, listened, and looked toward the door.

"We just got authorization."

Alexander stood.

"For what?"

Ross closed his notebook.

"Arrest warrants for David Mercer and Margaret Hale."

Claire's face on the screen went pale.

Alexander did not feel triumphant.

He felt tired.

Then Ross's phone buzzed again.

His expression hardened.

"Mercer is in custody."

Alexander waited.

"Your mother isn't."

"What do you mean?"

"Her driver abandoned the car near a private airfield forty minutes ago."

Alexander stared at him.

May you like

Ross continued.

"Margaret Hale is missing."
