Chapter 13: The Collapse of Control

The silence after Harold’s gaze settled on Celeste did not break immediately.

It held.

It stretched.

And then—

Celeste smiled.

Not denial.

Not panic.

Something colder.

“You’re asking a sick man to make medical judgments,” she said calmly. “That’s not evidence. That’s manipulation.”

No one answered her.

Because this time—

The room had shifted beyond language.

Dr. Harrow stepped forward. “I’ll need a full toxicology panel.”

“You’ll need authorization,” Celeste replied.

“You’re looking at it,” Adrian said.

Celeste turned to him slowly.

“You think this is over?” she asked.

“I think it’s begun.”

A flicker passed through her eyes.

Then she laughed.

Soft.

Controlled.

“Good,” she said. “Because you’ve just made a mistake you can’t undo.”

Adrian didn’t move.

“Explain.”

“You escalated this into something legal,” she said. “Which means everything comes out.”

“That’s the point.”

“Everything,” she repeated. “Including things you don’t know.”

That landed differently.

Adrian felt it—but didn’t show it.

Celeste stepped closer.

“You think I built control out of nothing?” she said quietly. “You think I walked into this family and just… took power?”

Adrian held her gaze.

“I think you took advantage of weakness.”

Celeste shook her head once.

“No,” she said. “I managed it.”

The distinction hung in the air.

And then—

Graham spoke.

“Legal has responded.”

Everyone turned.

He looked at his tablet.

“Emergency injunction filed,” he said. “Challenge to guardianship. Hearing requested within forty-eight hours.”

Celeste didn’t look surprised.

Of course she had moved already.

“Good,” she said.

Adrian nodded once.

“Prepare everything.”

Graham met his eyes. “Already in motion.”

The war was no longer contained inside the penthouse.

It had moved outward.

Into systems.

Into records.

May you like

Into truth—

or something that would try to replace it.
