Chapter 8: The Line That Breaks

Dinner was set.

Perfectly.

As if nothing had happened.

The table gleamed under soft lighting. Crystal. Silver. Precision.

Celeste sat at one end.

Adrian at the other.

Graham remained standing.

Mara didn’t come.

“Sit,” Celeste said coolly.

Adrian didn’t move.

“Where is she?” he asked.

“In her room.”

“Why?”

“She needs to understand boundaries.”

Adrian’s gaze sharpened.

“You don’t set those anymore.”

Celeste smiled faintly.

“You still don’t understand how this works.”

“No,” Adrian said. “I understand exactly how it’s been working.”

He stepped forward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

“Effective immediately,” he said, “you are removed from all medical decision authority regarding Harold Vale.”

Celeste’s smile didn’t fade—but it changed.

“You can’t do that.”

“I already have.”

“You don’t have legal standing.”

“I do now.”

A beat.

Then Graham placed a document on the table.

Celeste didn’t touch it.

“Temporary guardianship,” Adrian said. “Signed this afternoon.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Absolute.

Celeste looked at him—really looked this time.

Not as an obstacle.

Not as a son.

But as something else.

“You planned this.”

Adrian didn’t deny it.

“I confirmed it,” he said.

The distinction mattered.

To him.

To her.

To everything.

Celeste leaned back slightly.

For the first time—

She wasn’t in control.

And she knew it.
