Chapter 9: The Countermove

Celeste did not react immediately.

That was the first sign she was dangerous.

She read the document slowly, her fingers resting lightly against the edge of the paper, as if touch alone might change its contents.

Temporary guardianship.

Legal.

Executed.

Active.

When she looked up, her expression was calm again—but it wasn’t the same calm.

This one had edges.

“You moved quickly,” she said.

“I moved when I had enough,” Adrian replied.

Celeste gave a faint smile. “No. You moved when you thought you had control.”

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because control wasn’t something he assumed.

It was something he verified.

Celeste stood.

“You think a temporary order changes anything?” she continued. “Do you know how easy it is to challenge this?”

“I do.”

“And you still went through with it.”

“Yes.”

That answer lingered.

Celeste walked slowly around the table, her heels quiet against the marble.

“You’ve underestimated me before,” she said. “It didn’t end well for you.”

“That depends on who you ask.”

She stopped across from him.

“No,” she said softly. “It depends on who’s still standing.”

A beat.

Then she turned to Graham.

“And you,” she added. “Still loyal to the highest bidder?”

Graham didn’t flinch. “I’m loyal to documented reality.”

Celeste’s smile sharpened.

“That’s never been enough.”

She walked past him.

Toward the hallway.

Toward Harold’s room.

Adrian stepped forward instantly.

“You don’t go in there without me.”

Celeste paused.

Then, slowly, she turned her head.

“Careful,” she said. “You’re starting to sound afraid.”

Adrian held her gaze.

“I am,” he said.

The honesty landed harder than defiance ever could.

Celeste studied him for a moment longer.

Then she smiled again.

And this time—

She meant it.
