Chapter 10: The Arrest

The annual garden luncheon at the Vance family estate was in full swing. Evelyn mingled among local politicians, tech investors, and high-society elites, projecting an aura of absolute invincibility. She wore a stunning white silk dress, a masterclass in performative innocence.
David stood near the catering tent, nursing his third scotch. His skin was pale, and his hands shook violently.
"Smile, David," Evelyn hissed as she glided past him. "If you act like a victim, they will treat you like one."
Before David could reply, the heavy wrought-iron gates of the estate groaned open. Not for a guest, but for a convoy of four unmarked police cruisers and two black tactical vans.
The string quartet stopped playing. The lively chatter of the elite guests died instantly.
Detective Miller stepped out of the lead car, accompanied by a dozen uniformed officers. He bypassed the terrified valet and marched straight onto the manicured lawn.
"Evelyn and David Vance," Miller’s voice boomed over the hushed crowd.
Evelyn’s polite smile froze. She stepped forward, her chin tilted up in aristocratic defiance. "Detective, this is private property. You are trespassing on a sanctioned event."
"I have a warrant for your arrest, Mrs. Vance," Miller said, pulling a folded document from his jacket. "Conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, and grand larceny."
Gasps rippled through the wealthy crowd. Cell phones were discreetly pulled out.
"This is an outrage!" Evelyn shrieked, her composed facade shattering. "I will have your badge for this! Do you know who I am?"
"Hands behind your back, ma'am," an officer instructed, firmly grabbing her wrist. The cold click of handcuffs echoed loudly over the lawn.

David didn't fight. As two officers approached him, the scotch glass slipped from his trembling fingers, shattering on the stone patio. He dropped to his knees, sobbing openly in front of Silicon Valley's elite, as the cuffs were locked around his wrists.
Evelyn screamed at the crowd, threatening lawsuits and ruin, but no one moved to help her. They simply watched the mighty Vance empire crumble into the dirt.
