Chapter 12: The Discovery

The glass partition in the county jail’s maximum-security visitation room was thick, smudged, and reinforced with wire mesh. Evelyn Vance sat on the unforgiving steel stool, wearing a bright orange jumpsuit that deeply offended her sensibilities. Her hair, unwashed and lacking its signature blowout, hung limply around her face.

Across the glass sat Arthur Sterling, the most expensive criminal defense attorney in the state of California. He did not look happy.

"I don't understand the delay, Arthur," Evelyn snapped, picking up the heavy plastic phone receiver. "The bail hearing was supposed to be yesterday. I want out of this filthy place. The food is inedible, and the women in my cell block are animals."

Sterling sighed, rubbing his temples before leaning into his microphone. "There is no bail, Evelyn. The judge denied the motion this morning."

Evelyn’s eyes widened, a flash of genuine panic finally breaking through her arrogant facade. "Denied? On what grounds? I am a pillar of the community! I am not a flight risk!"

"You are wealthy enough to flee the country, and you are facing a mandatory life sentence," Sterling said bluntly, pulling a thick transcript from his Italian leather briefcase. "But that isn't why the judge remanded you. He remanded you because the prosecution just handed us their discovery file."

"And?" Evelyn demanded, her voice shrill. "It’s a circumstantial case. A hospital camera and a mechanic who conveniently disappeared."

"It's not circumstantial anymore, Evelyn," Sterling replied, his voice devoid of any warmth. He pressed the transcript against the glass so she could read the bold, capitalized heading: UNITED STATES V. DAVID VANCE - PROFFER AGREEMENT.

The color completely drained from Evelyn’s face. She stared at the paper as if it were a venomous snake.

"David took a plea deal last night," Sterling explained quietly. "He gave them everything. The shell companies, the wire transfers, the burner phone. He testified under oath that you orchestrated the entire plot to kill Clara and seize control of Lumina Tech. He even gave them the passcode to the encrypted laptop the mechanic left behind."

"He... he lied," Evelyn stammered, her hands shaking violently. "My own son. He's lying to save his own skin!"

"He provided the receipts, Evelyn. The District Attorney has a mountain of physical evidence corroborating his testimony." Sterling began packing his briefcase, snapping the brass locks shut. "I will represent you at trial, because that is what you are paying me an exorbitant amount of money to do. But I strongly suggest you prepare yourself for a guilty verdict. Your son just hammered the final nail into your coffin."

As Sterling stood up and walked away, Evelyn sat alone in the sterile room, the plastic receiver slipping from her hand. For the first time in her life, her money and her manipulation meant absolutely nothing.
