Chapter 2: The Intervention

The hospital room door flew open, hitting the rubber wall stop with a loud thud. Two nurses and a burly security guard rushed into the room, responding to the blaring emergency alarm.

Evelyn spun around, her meticulously styled hair swaying, instantly replacing her unhinged snarl with a mask of frantic concern. She pressed a hand to her chest, her voice trembling with practiced anxiety. "Oh, thank goodness you're here! She just... she just started panicking! I think the pain medication is making her hallucinate. She was thrashing around and hit the button."

David, still anchored to the doorway, nodded mutely, refusing to make eye contact with the medical staff.

The lead nurse, a sharp-eyed woman named Maria, didn't immediately buy the performance. She stepped past Evelyn, ignoring the older woman’s theatrics, and moved straight to Clara's bedside. She checked the monitors, silencing the alarm with a quick press of a button.

"Clara? Are you in distress? Do you need me to adjust your pain drip?" Maria asked, her voice calm and steady.

Clara took a deliberate breath. Her ribs ached with a fiery intensity, but her mind was sharper than it had been since the crash. She looked at Maria, then shifted her gaze to the security guard standing near the door.

"I am completely lucid," Clara said, her voice raspy but unwavering. She raised a shaking, bruised finger and pointed directly at Evelyn. "This woman just threatened my life. She attempted to force me to sign legal documents under duress, and she threatened to tamper with my life support if I refused."

Evelyn gasped dramatically. "That is utterly absurd! David, tell them! She’s delirious from the trauma."

David opened his mouth, but Clara cut him off.

"Don't bother asking him," Clara said coldly. "Just pull the security footage. The camera in the corner. I want the police called, and I want her removed from my room immediately."

The security guard looked up at the glass dome in the ceiling, noting the red recording light. His demeanor instantly shifted. He placed a firm hand on Evelyn’s shoulder. "Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you and your son to step out into the hallway. Now."

"You can't be serious," Evelyn sputtered, her veneer cracking again as indignation took over. "I am Evelyn Vance! I practically funded this hospital's new pediatric wing!"

"I don't care if you built the hospital with your bare hands, ma'am," the guard replied, his tone brooking no argument. "Step outside."

As the guard escorted a furious Evelyn and a silent, shrinking David out of the room, Maria leaned over Clara, gently checking the tape on her IV line.

"Did she really threaten you?" Maria whispered, her eyes filled with genuine concern.

"Yes," Clara breathed, a single tear finally escaping her eye, not from fear, but from the crushing grief of her husband's betrayal. "Please... don't let them back in. And don't let anyone touch that camera."

"I'll lock down your room," Maria promised gently. "You're safe now."
