Chapter 11: The Confession

The interrogation room was freezing, smelling of stale coffee and industrial bleach. David sat hunched over the metal table, stripped of his designer suit and dressed in a standard county jail uniform.
Across from him sat Detective Miller and a sharp-suited federal prosecutor named Hayes.
"Your mother isn't talking, David," Hayes said calmly, sliding a thick manila folder across the table. "She’s invoking her right to counsel and waiting for her high-priced lawyers to bail her out. But you and I both know the D.A. is requesting remanded custody. No bail. You are looking at twenty-five years to life."
David whimpered, burying his face in his hands. "I didn't want to hurt her. I just... my mother said it was the only way to save the company."
"Your mother manipulated you, David," Miller said, leaning in. He played the role of the sympathetic ear perfectly. "But the paper trail leads directly to you. You made the wire transfers to Hector Silva. You used the shell accounts. As it stands, you are the primary suspect."
Hayes tapped the folder. "We have the burner phone data. We have the bank records. We don't need a confession to convict you. But we want the head of the snake. We want Evelyn."
David looked up, his eyes bloodshot and terrified. "What are you offering?"
"Full immunity on the attempted murder charge," Hayes stated flatly. "You plead guilty to a lesser charge of corporate fraud. Five years in a minimum-security federal facility, out in three with good behavior. But only if you testify on the record, in open court, that Evelyn Vance orchestrated the hit."
Silence stretched in the small room. David stared at the polished metal table, weighing his loyalty to the woman who had controlled his entire life against the terrifying reality of a maximum-security prison.
He thought of Clara’s face in the hospital. He thought of his mother slapping him in the car, telling him to stop blubbering. Evelyn had never loved him; she had only weaponized him.
David slowly reached for the pen resting on the table.

"Where do I sign?" David whispered.
In the span of five minutes, David Vance gave them everything. He detailed the fake contractor invoices, the secret meetings, and the exact moment Evelyn had handed him the burner phone to contact the mechanic. The ultimate betrayal was finally returned in kind.
