Chapter 14: The Pre-Trial Silence

Autumn painted Silicon Valley in vibrant shades of gold and burnt orange by the time the trial date arrived.

The media circus surrounding the State v. Evelyn Vance case was unprecedented. The tech blogs, the national news networks, and the true-crime podcasts were all fixated on the sensational story of a billionaire matriarch orchestrating a hit on her brilliant daughter-in-law.

In the quiet sanctuary of her home, Clara sat by the fireplace, reading a novel. Marcus Thorne sat in the armchair opposite her, nursing a glass of sparkling water.

"Jury selection finished an hour ago," Marcus announced, checking his phone. "Opening statements begin tomorrow at nine a.m. sharp."

Clara didn't look up from her book. "Did she try to take a plea at the eleventh hour?"

"No," Marcus chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Sterling practically begged her to take a manslaughter plea to avoid the life sentence. But Evelyn’s pride won't allow it. She genuinely believes she can charm a jury into believing she was framed by her own son."

Clara finally closed the book, setting it on the coffee table. The physical scars had healed. Her limp was now barely noticeable, just a slight hesitation in her step on rainy days. But the psychological preparation for tomorrow was a different battle entirely.

"Are you ready to see her?" Marcus asked gently. "It will be the first time since St. Jude's."

"I am," Clara said, staring into the flickering flames. "For a long time, Marcus, I was terrified of her. Even before the crash, her approval dictated how I lived my life. But when I look back at that hospital footage now, I don't see a powerful woman. I see a desperate, pathetic bully holding a piece of plastic."

Marcus smiled, his eyes filled with immense respect for his client. "You testify on day three. All you have to do is tell the truth. Let the prosecutor do the rest."

"I'm not doing it for the prosecutor," Clara murmured, her voice steady. "I'm doing it to finally bury the ghost."
