Chapter 1 - The Echoes of the Manor

The grand foyer of the Whitmore estate was usually a place of quiet elegance.

Today, however, the silence felt heavy and suffocating.

Sunlight streamed through the massive arched windows.

It illuminated the dust motes dancing in the cold morning air.

Elias stood at the base of the sweeping double staircase.

He adjusted the cuffs of his dark navy suit.

His jaw was clenched tight with an unspoken worry.

He had arrived at the mansion expecting a routine meeting.

Instead, he found an empty house and a lingering sense of dread.

The sound of rapid, tiny footsteps broke the silence.

Elias turned his head toward the upper landing.

A small figure emerged from the shadows of the hallway.

It was Lily.

The five-year-old girl wore a light pink dress.

Her blonde hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail.

Her face was pale, and her eyes were rimmed with red.

She scrambled down the marble steps as fast as her little legs could carry her.

Elias softened his posture immediately.

He stepped forward to meet her at the bottom of the stairs.

Lily did not stop running until she crashed into his legs.

She wrapped her small arms around his knees.

Elias knelt down to her eye level.

He placed a gentle hand on her trembling shoulder.

"Lily, sweetheart, what is wrong?" he asked softly.

The little girl looked up at him.

Her big blue eyes were filled with unshed tears.

She took a shaky breath.

"My mommy’s been missing for three days," Lily whispered.

Elias felt a cold chill run down his spine.

Mia had not answered his calls, but he assumed she was just resting.

Three days was impossible.

"What do you mean, Lily?" Elias asked.

"She wasn't in her room," the girl replied, her voice trembling.

"I looked everywhere."

Elias stood up, taking her small hand in his.

"Show me," he said firmly.

They walked together down the long, opulent hallway.

The walls were lined with expensive portraits that seemed to mock their anxiety.

Every step echoed loudly against the polished tile floor.

Elias scanned every door and every corner.

Something was terribly wrong here.

Suddenly, Elias stopped in his tracks.

He tilted his head, listening intently.

A faint, rhythmic thumping sound vibrated through the floorboards.

It was weak, but it was definitely there.

"Did you hear that?" Elias murmured.

Lily nodded, squeezing his hand tighter.

"I heard her knocking downstairs," she said quietly.

Elias dropped to his knees.

He pressed his ear against the cold marble floor.

The knocking happened again, directly beneath a patterned section of the flooring.

He ran his hands over the tiles until he felt a wooden seam.

It was a hidden floor hatch, cleverly disguised to blend in.

His fingers traced the edge until they hit cold metal.

A heavy brass padlock secured the hatch to an iron ring in the floor.

Elias stared at the lock, his anger flaring.

"Who locked this?" Elias demanded, his voice thick with fury.

Lily shook her head, stepping back in fear.

Elias did not wait for another answer.

He stood up and looked around for a tool.

He spotted a heavy bronze statue resting on a nearby console table.

He grabbed the statue, ignoring its weight.

He brought it down hard against the brass padlock.

Sparks flew as metal clashed against metal.

He struck it again, putting all of his strength into the blow.

On the third strike, the locking mechanism shattered.

Elias tossed the statue aside.

He grabbed the broken lock and ripped it from the latch.

With a deep breath, he gripped the iron ring and heaved the heavy wooden hatch open.

The hinges groaned loudly in protest.

Stale, cold air rushed up from the dark compartment below.

Elias peered into the dim light.

Huddled in the corner of the concrete space was a woman.

It was Mia.

She wore a light dress and a gray cardigan that was now covered in dust.

She looked pale, exhausted, and terrified.

She flinched as the sudden light hit her eyes.

Then, she recognized him.

The fear in her expression melted into profound relief.

"Elias," she gasped, her voice hoarse and broken.

Elias reached down, extending both of his arms.

"I've got you," he said.

He pulled her up from the dark hole with one smooth motion.

Mia collapsed into his chest, sobbing uncontrollably.

Elias held her tightly in a fierce, emotional embrace.

He rested his chin on the top of her head.

He closed his eyes, silently thanking God that she was alive.

Lily let out a happy cry and wrapped her arms around her mother's waist.

Mia dropped to her knees to hug her daughter.

She buried her face in Lily's blonde hair.

"I am so sorry, my sweet girl," Mia wept.

Elias watched them, his heart aching for the pain they had endured.

He knelt beside them, placing a protective arm around Mia's shoulders.

"Who did this to you?" Elias asked quietly.

Mia looked up at him.

Her eyes were wide and haunted.

"Nathan," she whispered.

"Nathan locked me down here."

Elias felt his jaw tighten again.

The name hung in the air like a poisonous cloud.

The mansion no longer felt just empty; it felt violated.

Elias knew this was only the beginning.

He had found her, but now they had to survive what came next.

He helped Mia to her feet, his mind already racing with a plan.

May you like

"We need to leave," Elias stated plainly.

"Right now."
