Chapter 6 - The Silver Drive
The morning sun filtered weakly through the gaps in the heavy curtains.
Dust motes danced lazily in the thin shafts of pale light.
Elias was already awake, sitting quietly in a worn wooden chair by the door.
He had not slept a single wink throughout the long night.
His eyes had remained fixed on the barricaded entrance, listening to the forest.
On the leather sofa, Lily began to stir beneath a thick wool blanket.
She rubbed her sleepy eyes and sat up slowly.
She looked around the unfamiliar, rustic room with a confused expression.
Mia woke up immediately at the sound of her daughter moving.
She sat up and pulled Lily into a warm, tight hug.
"Good morning, my sweet girl," Mia whispered, kissing the top of her head.
"Are you hungry?"
Lily nodded silently, her blonde hair messy from sleep.
Elias stood up and walked over to the small kitchenette.
He opened a can of peaches and handed a small plastic bowl to the little girl.
"Here you go, Lily," Elias said with a gentle smile.
"Eat up."
Mia watched her daughter eat, a heavy sadness lingering in her eyes.
She turned her attention back to Elias.
"We cannot stay hidden in this cabin forever, Elias," Mia stated quietly.
"Nathan has too much money and far too many people working for him."
"He will eventually find this place."
Elias leaned against the wooden counter and crossed his arms.
"I know," Elias agreed softly.
"Hiding is only a temporary solution."
"If we want true freedom, we have to destroy his empire."
"We have to expose what he is doing."
Mia sighed heavily, shaking her head in frustration.
"I told you, he took my phone and all my evidence," she said.
"I have nothing to show the police."
"They will never believe my word against a powerful billionaire."
Elias reached into the inner pocket of his dark navy jacket.
He pulled out a small, silver USB flash drive.
He held it up so the pale morning light caught its metallic surface.
Mia stared at the small device, her eyes widening in shock.
"What is that?" she asked, her voice breathless.
"When you went missing, I knew something was terribly wrong," Elias explained.
"I used my old security clearance to bypass Nathan's private network."
"I downloaded every encrypted financial file I could find on his main server."
"I have the offshore accounts, the fake shell companies, all of it."
Mia stood up from the sofa, feeling a sudden surge of profound hope.
"You had the evidence this entire time?" she asked.
Elias nodded solemnly.
"I needed to find you first, Mia," he replied firmly.
"The data was useless to me if you and Lily were not safe."
"Now that I have you both, we can finally strike back."
"I have a trusted contact at a major federal news agency."
"If we give them this drive, Nathan's entire criminal world will publicly collapse."
Mia looked down at Lily, who was happily finishing her bowl of peaches.
She realized that this was their only real chance at a normal life.
They could stop running from the shadows and finally be free.
