Chapter 10 - The Extraction

The pale light of early morning slowly chased away the deep shadows of the forest.

A thick, gray mist rolled across the damp ground as they reached the edge of the tree line.

Before them lay the sprawling, cracked asphalt of the abandoned crop-duster airstrip.

Tall weeds pushed through the broken pavement, swaying gently in the cold morning breeze.

Elias paused in the thick brush, scanning the wide, open expanse with exhausted but sharp eyes.

The heavy silence of the dawn was suddenly broken by a distant, rhythmic thumping sound.

A sleek, black tactical helicopter crested the eastern ridge and descended rapidly toward the runway.

Mia gasped in sheer relief, clutching Lily tightly against her chest.

"They are here," Elias said, his voice raw and gravelly with exhaustion.

"We need to move now."

They broke from the cover of the trees and ran as fast as their aching legs could carry them.

The helicopter touched down heavily, kicking up a massive cloud of loose dirt and debris.

The side door slid open, revealing several heavily armed federal agents in dark tactical gear.

A tall man in a heavy armored vest stepped out onto the skid, waving them forward frantically.

It was Arthur.

Suddenly, the sharp, cracking sound of a high-powered rifle echoed from the woods behind them.

A bullet struck the cracked asphalt just inches from Elias’s heavy boots, sending rock shards flying.

Nathan’s men had finally caught up to them at the absolute last second.

"Get down!" Elias roared, physically shielding Mia and Lily as he pushed them toward the aircraft.

The federal agents immediately raised their rifles and laid down a deafening barrage of suppressing fire.

The loud roar of automatic gunfire filled the clearing, forcing the trailing mercenaries back into the trees.

Arthur reached out his strong arms and hauled Mia and Lily safely into the cabin of the helicopter.

Elias dove in right behind them, pulling the heavy metal door completely shut.

The pilot gunned the engine, and the aircraft lurched violently upward into the sky.

They ascended rapidly, leaving the gunfire and the desperate mercenaries far below them on the ground.

Elias leaned back against the cold metal wall, breathing heavily as he looked at Mia and Lily.

They were shivering and covered in freezing mud, but they were finally completely safe.

Elias reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out the small, silver USB drive.

He held it out, dropping the heavy metallic device securely into Arthur’s waiting hand.

"You have him, Arthur," Elias stated firmly over the loud roar of the helicopter engines.

"Burn his entire empire to the ground."

Arthur looked down at the drive, a fierce, satisfied smile spreading across his weathered face.

"By noon today, Nathan Whitmore will not have a single dime or a safe place to hide," Arthur promised.

Mia reached out and gently squeezed Elias's hand, tears of profound relief streaming down her tired face.

The tactical helicopter banked sharply toward the rising sun, flying away from the darkness and into a brand new life.
