Chapter 5 - The Cabin in the Woods

The sun began to dip below the jagged tree line.
Long, dark shadows stretched across the rough dirt path.
Elias steered the dusty sedan carefully over the final crest of the hill.
A small, rustic log cabin finally appeared in a quiet clearing ahead.
It was surrounded by towering pine trees and thick, tangled underbrush.
This was the safe house.
Elias pulled the car behind a dense thicket of bushes to completely conceal it from the trail.
He turned off the engine and let the natural quiet of the woods settle around them.
"We made it," Elias announced quietly to the backseat.
Mia peered out the window, her eyes scanning the dark tree line anxiously.
"Are you absolutely sure no one knows about this place?" she asked.
"It belonged to my late grandfather," Elias explained in a calm voice.
"It has not been on any official property registry or tax record in decades."
"We are entirely off the grid here."
Elias stepped out of the vehicle and opened the rear door.
He gently lifted a deeply sleeping Lily into his arms.
Mia stepped out next, her legs still trembling slightly as they touched solid ground.
The evening air was crisp, cold, and smelled heavily of pine needles.
Elias led them up the creaky wooden steps to the front porch.
He pulled a heavy, rusted key from his jacket pocket.
He unlocked the sturdy oak door and pushed it open.
The cabin smelled of settled dust and old firewood, but it felt incredibly secure.
Elias walked inside and flipped a small switch near the entrance.
Warm, yellow light from a battery-powered lantern flooded the main living room.
There was a modest stone fireplace, a worn leather sofa, and a small kitchenette.
"It is not a mansion, but it is safe," Elias said, setting Lily down gently on the sofa.
Mia looked around the simple room.
She felt the tight, painful knot in her chest slowly begin to loosen.
"It is perfect, Elias," she whispered sincerely.
"Thank you for saving us."
Elias nodded and immediately walked to the heavy curtains.
He pulled them tightly shut over the glass windows.
He needed to ensure that absolutely no light escaped into the dark woods outside.
He then moved to the kitchen counter to unpack the supplies he had purchased.
He walked back and handed Mia a bottle of fresh water and a protein bar.
"Eat something," he ordered gently.
"You need to start regaining your strength."
Mia took the food gratefully, sitting down next to her sleeping daughter.
Elias grabbed a heavy iron poker from the fireplace hearth.
He walked back to the heavy front door.
He slid a thick wooden beam across the heavy iron brackets mounted on the door frame.
The entrance was now firmly barricaded from the inside.
He stood by the window for a long moment, listening intently.
The only sound was the wind rustling through the high branches of the trees.
But Elias knew Nathan Whitmore was a man of infinite resources and relentless pride.
The billionaire would not simply let his wife and daughter vanish into the night.
Elias looked back at Mia, who was finally resting her tired eyes.
She had survived a horrific nightmare in that dark space beneath the floorboards.

But Elias knew the real fight for their permanent freedom was only just beginning.
He silently promised himself he would keep them safe, no matter the cost.
