Chapter 3 - The Approaching Storm

The dark sedan sped along the winding highway.
The dense pine forests of the upstate region blurred past the windows.
Elias checked the rearview mirror every few minutes.
The road behind them remained empty, but his tension did not fade.
He glanced at the dashboard clock.
They had been driving for nearly two hours.
In the backseat, Mia stirred awake with a sudden gasp.
She blinked rapidly, disoriented by the moving vehicle.
Her hand immediately went to Lily, who was still sleeping soundly against her side.
"You are okay," Elias said softly from the front seat.
"We are almost at the halfway point."
Mia took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart.
"Do you have your cell phone with you?" Elias asked.
Mia shook her head.
"Nathan took it before he pushed me into the compartment," she replied.
"He took my purse, my ID, and my credit cards."
Elias nodded, feeling a grim sense of relief.
"Good," he stated plainly.
"That means he cannot track your location through the device."
"Why did he do it, Mia?" Elias asked gently.
"What made him finally snap?"
Mia looked down at her hands, twisting her fingers together in her lap.
"I found some financial documents in his private home office," she explained, her voice trembling slightly.
"They were offshore bank records and lists of fake shell companies."
"He has been funneling millions of dollars out of his own firm."
"He walked in and realized I was looking at them."
"He told me I knew entirely too much about his business."
"He said I needed time in the dark to learn how to keep my mouth shut."
Elias gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white.
"He is a monster," Elias muttered.
"He will pay for what he did to you and Lily."
A weathered green highway sign appeared on the side of the road.
It indicated a small gas station three miles ahead.
"We need to stop for fuel and some basic supplies," Elias announced.
"Keep your head down when we pull into the lot."
He guided the car off the highway and onto a dusty gravel access road.
An old, rundown service station sat alone against the backdrop of the dense woods.
Elias parked the sedan near the rusted fuel pumps.
He turned off the engine and looked back at Mia.
"Lock the doors as soon as I step out," he instructed.
"Do not open them for anyone but me."
Mia nodded, pulling Lily a little closer to her chest.
Elias stepped out into the cool afternoon air.
He quickly filled the gas tank, keeping a watchful eye on the empty road.
He then walked into the small convenience store attached to the station.
The brass bells on the glass door jingled loudly as he entered.
An elderly man behind the counter barely looked up from his newspaper.
Elias moved through the narrow aisles with quiet efficiency.
He grabbed bottled water, high-protein snacks, and a basic first-aid kit.
He paid the cashier with physical cash, leaving no digital trail for Nathan's men to follow.
As he walked back to the car, a sudden flash of light caught his eye.
It was the harsh reflection of a black SUV cresting the hill in the distance.
Elias felt a cold spike of adrenaline hit his chest.
He hurried to the driver's side and tapped on the tinted glass.
Mia unlocked the door instantly.
Elias threw the plastic bags onto the passenger seat and jumped in.
"We have company," Elias said, turning the ignition key.
He slammed his foot on the gas pedal.
The sedan's tires spun on the loose gravel before finally catching traction.

They shot back onto the highway just as the black SUV reached the edge of the gas station.
The hunt was far from over.
