CHAPTER 1: THE SOUND OF WATER STOPPING

The first thing he did was turn off the tap.

The sudden silence cut through the house like a blade.

His wife flinched slightly, her hands still trembling over the greasy pan. For a moment, she didn’t dare look at him.

But he wasn’t looking at her anymore.

He walked past her—slowly, deliberately—into the living room.

The laughter from the TV filled the air, cheap and loud. His mother barely glanced up.

“Back already?” she muttered.

He picked up the remote.

Click.

The room fell into silence.

Six pairs of eyes turned toward him, confused… then uneasy.

“Who,” he said calmly, “left the kitchen like that?”
