CHAPTER 3: DRAWING THE LINE

His mother stood up.
“We are your family.”
“And she’s my wife,” he replied instantly. “And the mother of my child.”
That landed harder than shouting ever could.
He walked back into the kitchen and gently took the sponge from his wife’s hand.
“You’re done,” he said softly.
Her eyes widened. “But—”
“No.”
It wasn’t harsh.
It was final.
Then he turned back to the living room.
“Everyone who ate tonight,” he said, “can go finish what they started.”
No one moved.
So he added one more sentence.
