“You’re choosing her over us?” his mother snapped.
He didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.”
The word echoed.
Years of silent obedience—gone in a single breath.
His mother’s face hardened. “After everything we’ve done for you?”
He took a step forward.
“And after everything she’s endured here?”
No one had an answer.
Because they all knew.
The comments. The expectations. The way she was treated like help instead of family.
His wife stood in the doorway now, tears still in her eyes—but something else had appeared too.
Hope.
“I won’t let this continue,” he said. “Not in my home.”
