Chapter 13 - The Last Recording.

Grant had chartered a private aircraft from a regional airport forty miles away.
Adrian felt helpless watching other people act.
Instead, he stayed because Lily was upstairs and had spent too many nights with a father who was somewhere else.
At 1:42 in the morning, Carla received confirmation that Grant had been stopped before boarding.
His phone and laptop were seized under warrant.
He was not immediately charged with every suspected offense, but he was no longer going anywhere.
The forensic technician continued reviewing the teddy bear audio.
Most remaining files contained nothing useful.
At 2:08, he found one final recording from earlier that evening.
The timestamp was 8:31 p.m.
Less than an hour before Adrian came home.
Vanessa was alone with Lily.
The little girl was crying.
"Please don't make me break it."
Adrian looked up.
Vanessa's recorded voice answered.
"It is only a vase."
"I can't."
"Then I'll do it, and you will say you did."
A crash exploded through the speakers.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Adrian remembered the shattered porcelain on the floor.
The entire confrontation had been manufactured.
Vanessa continued.
"When your father comes in, you cry."
"If he yells at me, you go upstairs."
Lily asked why.
Vanessa answered patiently.
"Because grown-ups need to see what he is really like."
The technician advanced the file.
At 8:44, Grant's voice came through Vanessa's phone on speaker.
"Is the camera angle right?"
"Perfect."
"And the pills?"
Vanessa laughed softly.
"I'll put them in whatever he brings her."
Adrian looked at the white gift box sealed inside an evidence bag.
His skin went cold.
Grant asked what happened if Adrian did not bring Lily anything.
Vanessa answered, "Then they go in his coat pocket."
Carla looked toward the drawing room.
Vanessa was staring at the floor.
The recording continued.
Grant said they only needed enough doubt for an emergency hearing.
Vanessa said Adrian's grief history would do the rest.
Then came the sentence Adrian would remember for the rest of his life.
"A judge doesn't have to hate him."
"The judge only has to be afraid to leave the child with him."
Carla stopped the recording.
No one needed to hear more.
Vanessa's plan had been simple because it relied on respectable appearances.
She would create a frightened child.
She would create an angry father.
She would create pills where pills should never be.
Then she would let institutions make the accusation for her.
Adrian understood why the scheme made him feel more violated than simple theft.
Money could be returned.
A house could be restored.
A reputation could eventually recover.
But Lily had been taught to distrust her own memories so adults would believe a manufactured story.
That damage did not disappear when evidence was found.
Carla walked into the drawing room.
"Vanessa Mercer, stand up."
Vanessa looked at Nolan.
He looked away.
Carla informed her that she was being taken into custody while investigators referred potential charges involving child endangerment, unlawful restraint, fraud, forgery, evidence tampering, and conspiracy for prosecutorial review.
Vanessa rose slowly.
When the officer reached for her wrist, she finally looked at Adrian.
"You think you won?"
Adrian did not answer.
"Your daughter will remember tonight forever."
He stepped closer, but his voice remained calm.
"Yes."
"She will remember who frightened her."
Vanessa smiled bitterly.
"And she'll remember you weren't there before tonight."
The cruelty landed because it contained truth.
Adrian did not defend himself.
"I know."
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"That's the part I have to live with."
Carla guided her toward the foyer.
At the front door, Vanessa stopped.
"Adrian."
He looked at her.

She whispered, "Ask Margaret where Lily got the recorder."
Margaret went pale.
