Chapter 6 - The Room Below the House.

Adrian reached the basement door before anyone else.

The old brass key to Claire's sewing room still hung inside a small cabinet near the wine cellar.

His hands shook so badly that he missed the lock twice.

When the door finally opened, Lily was sitting on the floor beneath a covered worktable.

Her teddy bear was pressed beneath her chin.

She had been crying silently.

Adrian crossed the room and lifted her into his arms.

"Did anyone hurt you?"

Lily shook her head.

"Who brought you down here?"

Her eyes moved toward the doorway.

Vanessa had stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

Lily immediately tightened her arms around Adrian's neck.

"She said you wanted me to wait here."

Vanessa's face hardened.

"That is not true."

Lily began crying again.

"You said Daddy was mad because I broke the vase."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Lily, don't make up stories."

Adrian turned so his body blocked Vanessa from the child.

"Do not speak to her."

Sirens sounded outside the mansion.

Within minutes, two patrol officers and Detective Carla Reyes entered the basement.

"This is a family misunderstanding."

Carla looked at the locked sewing-room door.

"Family misunderstandings usually don't involve children being locked in basements."

Vanessa said nothing after that.

Adrian handed Carla the forged documents, the red custody folder, and the miniature recorder from the teddy bear.

Carla examined the recorder carefully.

"Do you know what's on it?"

"No."

"Do not play it on your own phone."

"Why?"

"Because if this becomes evidence, I want the original handled properly."

Adrian sat beside Lily in the library while they waited.

The white gift box remained unopened on the console table across the hall.

Lily stared at it occasionally.

"Is that for me?"

Adrian looked at her.

The question nearly broke him.

"Yes."

"Did I ruin tonight?"

He immediately knelt in front of her chair.

"No."

"You did nothing wrong."

Lily rubbed the teddy bear's remaining ear between two fingers.

"Vanessa said you get tired when I make problems."

Adrian felt something hot move through his chest.

"Vanessa was wrong."

"She said Mommy died because you were tired too."

Adrian stopped breathing.

Margaret turned away, crying.

"She told you that?"

Lily nodded.

"She said people leave when I'm difficult."

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

For years, he had feared that talking too often about Claire would reopen Lily's grief.

Vanessa had used that silence as an empty room and filled it with poison.

Across the hall, Carla spoke quietly with the technician.

Then she entered the library carrying the laptop.

"Mr. Mercer, there are more than eleven hours of audio on the card."

Adrian looked at the teddy bear.

"Eleven hours?"

Carla nodded.

"Most of it is ordinary household noise."

"But we found something recorded five days ago."

Vanessa appeared at the library doorway before an officer guided her back.

"I have a right to hear anything involving me."

Carla ignored her.

She placed the laptop on the desk.

The recording began with Lily breathing close to the microphone.

Then Vanessa's voice entered, sharp and unmistakable.

"Say it again."

There was a pause.

Lily's recorded voice whispered something too softly to hear.

Vanessa spoke again.

"No."

"Say it exactly the way I taught you."

May you like

Then Vanessa said the sentence that made every adult in the room go still.

"Tell me your father scares you."
