Chapter 14 - Pack Your Bags.

Vanessa was placed in a patrol car, but her final sentence remained inside the mansion.

Adrian turned toward Margaret.

"Where did Lily get the recorder?"

Margaret's hands began trembling.

"From me."

Adrian stared at her.

Carla stopped near the doorway.

Margaret took a breath.

"Three weeks ago, I found the recorder in the nursery desk."

"Vanessa had used it to record phone conversations."

"I thought if Lily carried it, we might finally have proof of what was happening when I wasn't in the room."

Adrian's anger rose again.

"You put a six-year-old in the middle of this?"

Margaret began crying.

"I know."

"I was desperate."

"I should have called you."

"I should have called the police."

"Instead I convinced myself that evidence would protect her better than my word."

Adrian walked away from her.

For a moment, the betrayal felt endless.

Vanessa had manipulated Lily.

Grant had used her trust.

Nolan had abused legal access.

Margaret, while trying to protect her, had asked a child to carry evidence without understanding the danger.

Carla spoke quietly.

"Mr. Mercer, she made a serious mistake."

"But based on what we've heard, the recorder may also be the reason we know the full scope tonight."

Adrian looked toward the stairs.

"That doesn't make it right."

"No."

Margaret wiped her face.

"I will leave in the morning if you want me to."

Adrian did not answer.

There were no simple heroes left in the house.

There were only adults who had made choices around a child who deserved none of the consequences.

At dawn, Samuel returned from a call with county records.

The forged deed transfer had been flagged and frozen.

The bank suspended the credit facility.

The emergency guardianship petition was withdrawn by Nolan's new counsel and referred for investigation.

Mercer Holdings postponed Tuesday's vote pending review of Grant's conflict disclosures.

At 6:10 a.m., Lily came downstairs in pajamas, carrying the teddy bear in a clear evidence sleeve because Carla had allowed her to say goodbye before police took it for processing.

She looked at Adrian.

"Is Vanessa coming back?"

He knelt.

"Not to live here."

"Ever?"

"No."

Lily stared at the front doors.

"Is Margaret leaving too?"

Margaret stood twenty feet away, unable to speak.

Adrian looked at his daughter.

"Do you want her to?"

Lily shook her head immediately.

"She stayed when I was scared."

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

Adrian took Lily's hand.

"Margaret made a mistake."

"A big one."

"But we are going to talk about it, and she will never ask you to keep something dangerous secret again."

Margaret nodded through tears.

"Never."

Lily looked toward the white gift box on the evidence table.

"Can I open my present?"

Carla smiled sadly.

"Not that box."

"Not yet."

Adrian promised to replace it.

Lily shook her head.

"I want that one."

"Why?"

She thought for a moment.

"Because Vanessa touched everything."

"I don't want her to make everything bad forever."

Adrian had no answer.

Hours later, after the jewelry store verified the bracelet and police finished processing the packaging, the gift was returned.

Adrian retied the ribbon badly, exactly the way he had the first time.

He carried it to Lily's room.

She opened it carefully.

The little silver star caught the morning light.

"It looks like Mommy's necklace," Lily whispered.

Adrian froze.

He had not chosen it for that reason.

Claire had worn a tiny star necklace on the night Lily was born.

Lily looked at him.

"Can I wear it?"

Adrian fastened it around her wrist.

Then she asked one last question.

"Daddy, are you packing your bags too?"

Adrian felt his heart stop.

"Why would I do that?"

May you like

Lily lowered her eyes.

"Because you always leave after something bad happens."
