Chapter 9 - The Vote Nobody Mentioned.

Adrian closed the library doors after Lily went upstairs with Margaret and the child-interview specialist.
Inside remained Samuel, Carla, Hector, and Adrian.
Vanessa and Nolan were kept in separate rooms under police supervision while investigators reviewed the basement footage.
Adrian faced Samuel.
"Start talking."
Samuel removed his glasses.
"The acquisition vote on Tuesday is closer than I told you."
"How close?"
"One voting block."
Adrian understood immediately.
"Lily's trust."
Samuel nodded.
Claire had inherited twelve percent of Mercer Holdings from her father before marrying Adrian.
When Claire died, those shares passed into a trust for Lily.
Adrian served as trustee and voted the shares until Lily reached adulthood, subject to fiduciary restrictions.
If Adrian were temporarily removed for incapacity or misconduct, the trust instrument required a replacement fiduciary.
Normally that would have been an independent bank.
Samuel looked ashamed.
"Except the trust was amended three years ago."
Adrian stared at him.
"By whom?"
"Claire."
The name filled the room.
Samuel opened a file on his tablet.
"Before she died, Claire added a family-preservation clause."
"If you became unable to serve, a legally appointed guardian for Lily could nominate an interim co-trustee subject to court approval."
Adrian's voice dropped.
"Vanessa wanted to become Lily's guardian."
"Yes."
"Then nominate someone who would vote with Grant."
"That is my concern."
Adrian walked to the window.
Outside, police lights reflected red and blue across the stone fountain.
"Why didn't you tell me the vote was this close?"
Samuel hesitated.
"Because Grant assured the board he had stopped challenging it."
Adrian laughed without humor.
"Grant lies for sport."
Carla asked Samuel whether Grant could profit personally from blocking the acquisition.
Samuel nodded.
"His investment group owns a competing logistics company."
"If our acquisition proceeds, the competitor loses most of its value."
"If the acquisition fails, Grant has time to sell or refinance."
Carla wrote something in her notebook.
Adrian thought about the male voice on the recording.
He had known Grant his entire life.
The voice had sounded unfamiliar because the recorder distorted it.
Now he played the clip again.
The rhythm was unmistakable.
"That's Grant."
Samuel listened.
"I think you're right."
Carla requested a copy for voice comparison.
Hector entered carrying a printed access report.
"Sir, we found something else."
"Vanessa's account deleted the six minutes from the local cameras."
"But someone else logged into the security server remotely at the same time."
Adrian took the page.
The login originated from Mercer Holdings headquarters.
The username belonged to Grant Mercer.
Carla's eyes sharpened.
"Can he access residential security?"
"Board-level family members had emergency access after Mr. Mercer's father died," Hector said.
Adrian swore quietly.
He had never removed Grant's credentials.
Vanessa had not acted alone.
The front gate intercom suddenly chimed.
Hector looked at the screen.
A black SUV waited outside.
The driver lowered the window.
Grant Mercer looked directly into the gate camera.
"Adrian called me," he said.
Adrian had not called him.
Carla smiled faintly.
"Interesting."
Adrian walked toward the foyer.
"Let him in."
Samuel grabbed his arm.
"Are you sure?"
Adrian looked toward the upstairs landing where Lily had disappeared.
"For the first time tonight, yes."
The gates opened.
Grant entered the mansion ten minutes later wearing concern like a tailored suit.
"I heard police were here."
He opened his arms toward Adrian.
"What the hell happened?"
Before Adrian could answer, Lily appeared at the top of the stairs.
She saw Grant.
Her face drained of color.
May you like
Then she whispered the sentence that ended his performance.
"That's the man from the secret room."
