Chapter 8 - The Trap in the Hallway.

Adrian stared at the security monitor as if it had betrayed him personally.
For years, he had paid for cameras, alarms, access logs, and encrypted servers to protect his family.
Vanessa had turned the entire system into a stage.
Carla asked Hector to pull every camera angle from the foyer and drawing-room corridor.
One camera above the staircase had captured Adrian entering with the white gift box.
Vanessa looked toward a small wall display immediately before she screamed.
Then she deliberately stepped closer to Lily.
Margaret moved between them.
Vanessa raised her arms dramatically.
Carla leaned toward the screen.
"She was performing for the camera."
Adrian felt sick.
"And I walked into it."
"You didn't touch her."
"I shouted."
"A father shouting one name after seeing his child terrified is not the evidence she hoped for."
Hector opened the backup server.
The missing six minutes were still present in an off-site archive Vanessa apparently did not know existed.
The footage showed Vanessa walking upstairs after the nursery door slammed.
She entered Lily's bedroom.
Thirty seconds later, she emerged holding Lily's hand.
The child still carried her teddy bear.
Vanessa guided her downstairs through the service passage.
At the basement door, Lily tried to pull away.
Vanessa bent down and spoke directly into her face.
There was no audio, but Lily obeyed.
Two minutes later, Vanessa came upstairs alone.
Adrian turned away from the monitor.
Vanessa had not acted in a sudden rage.
She had known exactly what she was doing.
"You absolutely may," Carla said.
Vanessa made the call from a police officer's phone because hers remained upstairs as part of the scene.
She spoke only six words.
"Come now."
"Bring the emergency order."
Adrian heard her.
"What emergency order?"
Vanessa did not answer.
Forty minutes later, a black sedan stopped outside.
A young attorney named Nolan Price entered the mansion carrying a briefcase.
Samuel Ross arrived less than a minute behind him.
The two men saw each other in the foyer and stopped.
Samuel's expression became furious.
"You."
Nolan looked toward Vanessa.
Carla noticed the exchange.
"You two know each other?"
Samuel nodded.
"He worked at my firm until yesterday."
Adrian remembered the name.
Nolan had been an associate in Samuel's trusts-and-estates department.
Samuel pointed toward him.
"His credentials were used to submit the petition involving Lily's trust."
Nolan immediately raised both hands.
"My credentials were stolen."
Vanessa interrupted.
"I want to speak with my lawyer privately."
Samuel laughed bitterly.
"He is not your lawyer."
Nolan's face tightened.
"I am representing Mrs. Mercer tonight."
He opened his briefcase.
Inside was a stamped court document.
He handed it to Carla.
"This is an emergency protective petition filed this afternoon."
Adrian stepped forward.
Samuel read over Carla's shoulder.
His jaw tightened.
The petition alleged emotional instability, substance abuse, and intimidation by Adrian.
It requested that Vanessa be given temporary authority over Lily pending an evaluation.
But it had not yet been signed by a judge.
Samuel pointed to the lower corner.
"This is only a filed petition."
"It is not an order."
Nolan looked annoyed.
Vanessa had apparently expected something more.
Carla handed it back.
"Then tonight it changes nothing."
Vanessa's calm finally cracked.
"You cannot leave that child with him."
Lily heard her from the library.
She began crying again.
Adrian moved toward his daughter.
Vanessa shouted after him.
"You think this is over because you found one recording?"
Adrian stopped.
Vanessa's eyes were bright with fury.
"Ask Samuel what happens to Mercer Holdings if Tuesday's vote fails."
Samuel went completely still.
Adrian turned toward him.
"What is she talking about?"
May you like
Samuel did not answer quickly enough.
That frightened Adrian more than Vanessa's threat.
