Chapter 10 - The File Adrian Never Saw.

Daniel refused to explain the Mercer file until Marcus swept the chairman's private office for surveillance devices.

They found none.

Only then did Daniel unlock a fireproof cabinet behind a framed photograph and remove a thin red folder.

The label read MERCER - PRIVATE.

Adrian stared at it.

"How long have you had that?"

"Six years."

"And you never showed me?"

Daniel placed the folder on the desk.

"Your father asked me not to unless the Hale family tried to use the foundation again."

Adrian felt anger sharpen his words.

"They have been using it for years."

"I did not know that."

"You approved Mercer."

"Because your father told me the arrangement had been corrected."

Daniel sat heavily behind the desk.

"I believed him."

Adrian opened the folder.

Inside were handwritten notes from his father, legal correspondence, and a draft settlement agreement that had never been signed.

The first page described a failed real-estate partnership between Richard Vale and Gregory Hale, Vanessa's father.

Fifteen years earlier, they had planned to convert unused commercial buildings into vocational schools.

The idea later inspired the Vale Family Education Fund.

But Gregory had allegedly used partnership money to acquire properties through separate companies without Richard's knowledge.

Richard discovered it and ended the partnership.

He considered legal action.

Then he changed his mind.

"Why didn't my father pursue this?" Adrian asked.

Daniel looked at the photograph on the wall.

"Your mother was ill at the time."

"He wanted no public fight connected to the foundation she had just created."

"Gregory returned part of the money and promised to stay away from future foundation deals."

Adrian flipped through the pages.

"But he didn't."

"Apparently not."

One document listed Mercer Educational Properties.

The company had been created by a former Hale executive.

Adrian felt a bitter realization settle over him.

The scheme had survived because everyone had treated an old promise as though it were a control system.

"My father should have documented everything formally."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"And I should have questioned Mercer years ago."

"Yes."

Daniel did not excuse either of them.

Adrian respected that.

Priya joined them with fresh findings.

"The property markups total approximately 3.4 million dollars across seven transactions."

Adrian looked at her.

"How much reached Hale-linked entities?"

"We can directly trace about 1.2 million so far."

"The rest moved through intermediaries."

Daniel leaned back.

"Does Vanessa know?"

Priya considered the question.

"Her gala activity appears separate from the older property transactions."

"She may have discovered the system and copied it on a smaller scale."

Adrian thought of Grant's words.

She thinks this is about gala money.

"Then Grant knows more than she does."

Marcus entered carrying a printed email.

"And Grant is getting nervous."

He handed it to Adrian.

The email had been sent from Grant to Peter Sloan that morning.

MERCER ARCHIVE MUST BE CLEAN BEFORE THE GALA.

Peter had replied with a single sentence.

TOO LATE. SOMEONE COPIED IT MONTHS AGO.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

"Who copied it?"

"We don't know."

His phone rang.

It was Lydia.

Adrian answered.

"Everything all right?"

"Yes."

She sounded distracted.

"But my mother remembered something about the apartment payment."

"What?"

"The landlord received a second envelope with the rent transfer."

"What was in it?"

"A letter saying the money came from the Vale Employee Support Program."

Adrian frowned.

"There is no program by that name."

"That's what I thought."

Lydia continued.

"My mother kept the letter."

"Send Marcus a photograph."

A minute later, the image appeared on his phone.

The letter carried a Vale Holdings logo and a forged signature.

Not Adrian's.

Not Daniel's.

Nora's.

Adrian stared at it.

Nora had left eight months earlier.

The letter was dated only five weeks ago.

Someone was still using her identity too.

Then Adrian noticed a tiny line at the bottom of the page.

Document reference: MEP-17.

Priya saw it and immediately searched the Mercer archive.

A file labeled MEP-17 opened.

It was not a property contract.

It was a list of names.

Household staff.

Foundation employees.

Junior accountants.

Drivers.

Assistants.

Beside each name was a dollar amount and a status code.

Lydia's name appeared near the bottom.

Nora's appeared above it.

Peter Sloan's name appeared at the top.

Daniel stared at the page.

"What is this?"

Priya opened the file metadata.

"A liability map."

"People whose identities could be used to explain payments if anyone started asking questions."

Adrian felt his stomach turn.

These were not simply employees.

They were planned scapegoats.

Then Priya scrolled farther.

One final name appeared beneath a red heading marked RESERVE.

ADRIAN VALE.

Adrian stared at his own name.

May you like

Beside it was an amount larger than all the others.

$4,800,000.
