Chapter 7 - Nora Comes Back.

Nora Bell arrived at a private conference room in Vale Holdings shortly after noon.
Adrian had chosen the location only after Marcus isolated the room from the company's internal network.
Nora looked different from the woman he remembered.
Her dark hair had more gray in it, and her posture was more guarded.
But her eyes were exactly the same.
Sharp.
Observant.
Unwilling to waste words.
Adrian stood when she entered.
"Nora."
She did not smile.
"Mr. Vale."
That formality hurt more than he expected.
For six years she had called him Adrian whenever no guests were present.
"I'm sorry," he said.
Nora looked at him steadily.
"For which part?"
Adrian accepted the question.
"For not noticing what was happening in my own home."
"That is a start."
They sat across from each other.
Marcus remained near the door while Priya joined by secure video connection.
Adrian placed the recovered letter on the table.
"I found this last night."
Nora's face changed when she saw it.
"Where?"
"Behind the east pantry cabinet."
She closed her eyes briefly.
"I thought Grant found it."
"Why did you hide it there?"
"Because Vanessa had started searching my room."
Adrian felt anger again, but Nora continued before he could speak.
"I had confronted her about the invoices."
"She told me they were wedding expenses and that you had approved everything."
"I knew that wasn't true because some charges were dated before you were engaged."
Priya's voice came through the speaker.
"Did you ever see Grant create false documents?"
"Yes."
"How often?"
"Enough that I stopped assuming it was a misunderstanding."
Nora folded her hands.
"He used staff initials because small household approvals attracted less attention."
"Then Northstar bundled those costs into event invoices."
Adrian looked at her.
"Why didn't you come directly to me?"
Nora's expression turned tired.
"I tried."
She reached into her bag and removed an old phone.
"Three times."
She opened a message thread and handed it to him.
Nora had sent Adrian several short requests for a private meeting.
Every one showed as read.
Adrian remembered none of them.
"I never saw these."
"I know that now."
"How?"
"Because Vanessa answered one from your phone."
Nora opened a screenshot.
A reply from Adrian's number read, Vanessa handles household issues now. Please work through her.
Adrian stared at the message.
He had never written it.
Nora watched him absorb the implication.
"You left your phone on the terrace during your father's memorial dinner."
"Vanessa had it for maybe ten minutes."
Adrian remembered the evening.
He had been overwhelmed and distracted.
Vanessa had repeatedly offered to handle small matters for him.
He had called it support.
Now he saw how useful his grief had made him.
"What happened after you hid the letter?"
Nora looked toward Marcus.
"Grant found me in the staff room."
"He said Vanessa knew I was collecting records."
"He told me that if I went to Adrian, missing jewelry would be found in my luggage and altered expense forms would be sent to the police."
Adrian's voice went cold.
"Did he threaten you physically?"
"No."
Nora shook her head.
"He didn't need to."
"He knew I was caring for my sister and could not afford to lose my reputation or spend months defending myself."
She looked directly at Adrian.
"People with money do not always understand how frightening paperwork can be when someone else controls the story."
Adrian did not defend himself.
"You're right."
Nora seemed surprised by the answer.
Priya asked another question.
"Why resign instead of staying and gathering more evidence?"
"Because I found a bank application using my information."
Nora reached into the bag again.
"It was for an account I never opened."
She placed a photocopy on the table.
Adrian immediately thought of the account in Lydia's name.
"They did the same thing to you."
"They tried."
Nora nodded.
"The bank rejected it because my identification scan was unclear."
Marcus leaned closer.
"Do you know where they got your identification?"
"My employment file."
A cold silence settled across the room.
Staff files were stored in the household management office.
Vanessa had no formal authority over them.
But she had been in that office many times.
Adrian looked at Marcus.
"Lock every personnel record and preserve access logs."
Marcus nodded.
Nora raised one hand.
"There is one person you need to check before you assume Grant did all of this himself."
Adrian waited.
"Your former household accountant, Peter Sloan."
Adrian knew the name.
Peter had left six months earlier for a better job in Chicago.
"What about him?"
"He approved Northstar's first invoice."
Priya typed something off-screen.
"Peter Sloan currently works for Hale Development Group."
Adrian looked at Nora.
Grant's family company.
Nora nodded slowly.
"Exactly."
Adrian's phone buzzed with a secure message from Marcus's team.
They had recovered part of the deleted staff-room video.
Marcus played it without speaking.
On-screen, Nora held the envelope while Vanessa stood in front of her.
Grant entered and closed the door.
The damaged audio crackled for several seconds.
Then Vanessa's voice became clear.
"You can leave quietly, or I can make Adrian believe you stole from his mother."
Adrian did not move.
Nora looked down at the table.
The recording continued.
Grant said something indistinct.
Then Vanessa answered.
"Don't worry about Adrian."
"He never checks the details when he trusts someone."
The recovered clip ended.
Adrian stared at the black screen.
His phone vibrated again.
A breaking-news alert appeared.
Vanessa Hale had announced a press conference for 4:00 p.m.
The headline beneath it read:
VANESSA HALE TO ADDRESS FALSE ALLEGATIONS AND END OF VALE ENGAGEMENT.
Nora looked at Adrian.
"She isn't running away."
"No," Adrian said.

He picked up the ring envelope from the table.
"She's trying to control the story before the truth catches her."
