Chapter 11 - The Name at the Bottom.

Adrian read the number twice.

Four million eight hundred thousand dollars.

The figure was so large that for a moment it looked less like money and more like a message.

Someone had planned to make him the final explanation if the Mercer transactions were ever exposed.

Daniel stood beside the desk, suddenly looking older than he had that morning.

"Can they actually tie that amount to Adrian?" he asked.

Priya enlarged the MEP-17 file.

"Not from this document alone."

"But the amount matches a transfer posted six years ago to a dormant Vale investment account."

Adrian looked at her sharply.

"Which account?"

Priya gave him the number.

He recognized it.

The account had belonged to a real-estate project abandoned after his mother's death.

Adrian had assumed it was closed.

"Who reopened it?"

"That is what we are checking."

Marcus pulled up old access logs.

"The account was reactivated with paperwork carrying your father's signature."

Adrian stared at the screen.

"My father was alive then."

"Yes."

"So maybe he did it."

Daniel did not answer.

Adrian turned toward him.

"You know something again."

Daniel rubbed a hand over his face.

"Your father used that account during the settlement discussions with Gregory Hale."

"He may have moved funds temporarily while calculating what the partnership owed."

Priya shook her head.

"The transfer occurred three months after the settlement talks ended."

"And the money came from a Mercer-linked company."

Adrian felt the old image of his father begin to shift.

Richard Vale had not been perfect.

Adrian knew that.

But he had built his life around the belief that his father had been careful with other people's trust.

Now even that needed verification.

"We follow the records," Adrian said.

"Even if they lead to him."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Your mother would have said the same thing."

The words settled the room.

That evening, the education gala began under extraordinary scrutiny.

Adrian had considered canceling again.

Instead, he changed the program.

There would be no celebration of donors.

No engagement photographs.

No appearance from Vanessa.

The evening would focus only on scholarship recipients and the foundation's work.

Reporters crowded the entrance of the hotel ballroom.

Adrian arrived alone.

He wore a black suit and no engagement band.

Questions came immediately.

"Mr. Vale, did Lydia Hart break up your engagement?"

"Is Vanessa Hale under investigation?"

"Did your foundation lose millions?"

Adrian stopped before the microphones.

He had prepared one sentence.

"An independent review is underway, and verified findings will be released through the proper channels."

A reporter shouted another question.

"Do you still stand by the maid?"

Adrian looked directly at the cameras.

"Her name is Lydia Hart."

Then he walked inside.

He did not defend her with dramatic speeches.

He simply refused to let anyone reduce her to a job title for entertainment.

Inside the ballroom, Daniel met him near the stage.

"Vanessa is here."

Adrian stopped.

"She was removed from the host committee."

"She came as a guest of her father."

Adrian looked across the room.

Gregory Hale stood near the rear entrance in a dark tuxedo.

Beside him was Vanessa.

She wore a silver dress and a calm expression.

Grant was nowhere in sight.

Vanessa saw Adrian and walked toward him.

The room subtly changed as people noticed.

Phones lifted.

Conversations quieted.

Vanessa stopped several feet away.

"I didn't come to make a scene."

Adrian kept his voice even.

"Then don't."

She glanced around at the guests.

"You are letting strangers turn our private life into an investigation."

"The financial review is not about our private life."

"You know what I mean."

"I know what I saw at dinner."

Her jaw tightened.

"I apologized for that."

"You explained it."

"That is not the same thing."

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

Then she lowered her voice.

"Grant has been using my name."

Adrian watched her carefully.

"For what?"

"Northstar."

"The hidden cameras."

"The bank account in Lydia's name."

She spoke quickly now.

"I knew about some inflated event bills."

"I did not know what he was doing with employee identities."

Adrian felt no relief.

"You still knew about false bills."

Vanessa looked away.

"I thought Grant would repay it."

"From what?"

She did not answer.

"And Nora?"

Vanessa's expression changed.

"Nora was going to destroy my family over paperwork she did not understand."

Adrian's voice hardened.

"So you threatened to frame her."

Vanessa stared at him.

She realized then that he had recovered the recording.

"You have the staff-room footage."

Adrian did not confirm it.

That was enough.

For the first time all evening, Vanessa looked truly frightened.

"Adrian, listen to me."

"Grant has copies of documents that can make it look like your father took millions from the foundation."

"He plans to release them tonight if you don't stop the audit."

Adrian felt the trap close around him.

Vanessa reached into her clutch and removed a flash drive.

"This is what he has."

She held it between two fingers.

"Call off the review, and I'll give it to you."

Adrian looked at the drive.

Then he looked at her.

"If the documents are real, they should be reviewed."

Vanessa blinked.

"Even if they destroy your father's name?"

"Even then."

Her confidence faltered.

Adrian stepped closer, lowering his voice so only she could hear.

"That is the difference between protecting a person and protecting a lie."

Before Vanessa could answer, Gregory Hale appeared behind her.

"Enough," he said.

His face was pale.

He looked at Adrian, then at the flash drive in Vanessa's hand.

"Give it to him."

Vanessa turned.

"Dad."

Gregory's voice shook.

"Give it to him before Grant ruins all of us."

Vanessa stared at her father.

Then a commotion rose near the ballroom entrance.

Marcus pushed through the crowd toward Adrian.

"We have a problem."

"What happened?"

Marcus held up his phone.

A financial news site had just published a leaked document.

The headline read:

LATE VALE PATRIARCH LINKED TO $4.8 MILLION FOUNDATION PAYMENT.

The article was already spreading.

Adrian looked toward Vanessa.

Her face had gone white.

"That wasn't me," she whispered.

May you like

Gregory closed his eyes.

"Grant did it."
