Chapter 6 - A Signature That Wasn't His.

Daniel arrived at Vale House forty minutes later without an assistant or driver.
He entered the library carrying a leather folder and an expression Adrian had seen only during corporate emergencies.
Priya Shah placed the disputed authorization in front of him.
Daniel studied it for less than ten seconds.
"The signature looks right," he said.
Adrian watched him carefully.
"But?"
"I never sign foundation approvals in blue."
Priya leaned forward.
"Why does that matter?"
Daniel opened his folder and removed three original documents.
"I use black ink for foundation work because the archive scans blue signatures poorly."
He placed the examples beside the questionable approval.
The difference was small, but visible.
Adrian felt a fraction of the pressure ease from his chest.
Then Priya pointed to the electronic audit line beneath the signature.
"The document was uploaded from your office network."
Daniel's face tightened.
"When?"
"January fourteenth at 9:22 p.m."
Daniel immediately looked at Adrian.
"I was in Boston that night."
Adrian remembered.
Daniel had attended a university board dinner.
"Who had access to your office?"
"My executive assistant, building security, and cleaning staff."
He stopped.
"And Vanessa."
Adrian stared at him.
"Why would Vanessa have access to your office?"
Daniel looked embarrassed.
"She asked to leave gala invitations on my desk."
"At nine at night?"
"She said she was nearby."
Adrian pushed away from the table.
The pattern was becoming painfully clear.
Vanessa had moved through homes, offices, and committees because people trusted her relationship with him.
She had borrowed his credibility without ever asking permission.
Priya opened another file.
"We need to be careful."
"Suspicion is not evidence."
Adrian nodded.
"Then keep following the evidence."
Marcus entered the library holding a transparent evidence bag.
Inside was a small black memory card.
"Found this inside the hidden camera from the staff room."
He handed it to Priya.
"Local storage."
"Meaning whoever installed it may have recorded even when the wireless connection was off."
Priya's eyes sharpened.
"Can we view it without altering the files?"
"I made an image copy."
Marcus connected the copy to an isolated laptop.
Dozens of video clips appeared.
Most showed ordinary staff breaks.
People eating lunch.
Someone reading a newspaper.
Two housekeepers laughing over coffee.
Then Marcus opened a clip dated three weeks earlier.
Lydia entered the staff room alone.
She sat at the table and opened an envelope from payroll.
A minute later Vanessa appeared.
There was no audio.
Vanessa placed a document in front of Lydia.
Lydia read it and shook her head.
Vanessa pointed to the bottom of the page.
Lydia shook her head again.
Vanessa leaned closer.
Lydia stood.
Vanessa blocked the doorway for several seconds.
Adrian's hands curled against the edge of the table.
Eventually Vanessa stepped aside.
Lydia left without signing anything.
Daniel looked at Adrian.
"What was the document?"
Marcus opened another clip from the next morning.
Vanessa returned to the staff room with Grant.
Grant placed a stack of papers on the table.
He practiced Lydia's initials repeatedly on a blank sheet.
No one spoke.
No one needed to.
Adrian felt a cold wave of disbelief move through him.
Priya stopped the video.
"This does not prove which documents were altered."
"But it is significant."
"Very significant."
Daniel's voice was grim.
Marcus opened another folder from the memory card.
"There are still images too."
One photograph showed Grant holding several household invoices.
Another showed Vanessa photographing Adrian's office keys on her phone.
The final image showed something none of them expected.
Nora Bell stood in the staff room.
Vanessa was beside her.
Nora held the same cream envelope Adrian had found behind the pantry panel.
The time stamp was eight months earlier, two nights before Nora resigned.
Adrian leaned closer to the screen.
Vanessa reached for the envelope.
Nora pulled it away.
In the next image, Grant entered the room.
Then the sequence stopped.
"No more?" Adrian asked.
Marcus checked.
"The next twenty minutes are missing from the card."
Daniel exhaled.
"Again?"
Marcus nodded.
"But this time the deletion may not be complete."
Priya started a recovery process.
While the files loaded, Adrian called Nora's old number.
It went directly to voicemail.
He tried again.
Nothing.
He searched his contacts for her emergency information.
Her sister's number was still listed.
Adrian called.
A woman answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
"This is Adrian Vale."
Silence.
Then the woman said something that made him straighten.
"I've been waiting for you to call."
Adrian looked at the others.
"Is Nora with you?"
"No."
"Do you know where she is?"
"Yes."
"I need to speak with her."
The woman hesitated.
"She said you would only call after Vanessa finally made a mistake in front of you."
Adrian felt shame rise behind his ribs.
"She was right."
"Nora will speak to you."
The sister lowered her voice.
"But not on the phone."
"Why?"
"Because someone tried to get into her email again this morning."
Marcus looked up sharply.
Adrian asked the obvious question.
"Who?"
May you like
The woman answered with a name Adrian did not expect.
"The login came from Vale Holdings headquarters."
