Chapter 8 - The Story She Sold.

By 3:55 p.m., every television in the Vale Holdings communications suite showed Vanessa standing behind a white podium.
She wore a cream suit, her blonde hair smooth and controlled, and her expression carefully wounded.
Adrian watched from a conference room with Daniel, Nora, Marcus, and Priya.
Lydia was not there.
Adrian had asked her to stay home, but she had insisted on joining by encrypted video because the accusations involved her name.
Vanessa began with a practiced breath.
"The last twenty-four hours have been painful for everyone involved."
Adrian almost admired the performance.
She never raised her voice.
She never insulted Lydia directly.
She did something more effective.
She implied.
She said an employee had accessed private rooms without permission.
She said valuables had gone missing.
She said Adrian had been under enormous emotional pressure.
She said she hoped he would eventually understand how people around him had manipulated his trust.
Lydia watched from the screen without speaking.
Then a reporter asked whether Vanessa had thrown water at a maid.
Vanessa paused at exactly the right moment.
"There was an accident at dinner."
"I reacted badly."
"I regret that."
Adrian's expression hardened.
The sentence sounded responsible until he remembered what she had actually said.
Maybe now you'll pay attention.
Another reporter asked about Northstar Events.
For the first time, Vanessa's eyes shifted.
Only slightly.
But Adrian saw it.
"Northstar is a legitimate vendor used by many charitable organizations," she said.
Priya murmured from the table.
"That answer was ready."
A third reporter shouted a question about Lydia's alleged bank account.
Vanessa shook her head sadly.
"I won't discuss an employee's private finances."
Lydia gave a short, humorless laugh through the screen.
"She already leaked them."
Adrian looked at her.
"We cannot prove she sent the leak yet."
"I know."
Lydia's voice steadied.
"That's what makes it work."
Vanessa finished by asking the public to respect her privacy.
Then she left without answering questions about Grant.
Daniel turned off the television.
"She just positioned herself as the reasonable person in the room."
"For now," Priya said.
Adrian looked at the recovered evidence.
He could release the hidden-camera footage and destroy Vanessa's narrative in minutes.
But Nora shook her head before he even suggested it.
"Do not publish staff-room recordings."
Adrian looked at her.
"Even the clip that proves what she did?"
"Those cameras also recorded employees who never agreed to be watched."
"Do not turn our privacy into your weapon just because she did."
Adrian absorbed the rebuke.
"You're right."
Lydia nodded from the screen.
"Use the records, not our private moments."
Priya smiled slightly.
"Good."
"Because I have records."
She projected a bank tracing report onto the wall.
The twenty-five-thousand-dollar account using Lydia's name had been opened online.
The application used Lydia's correct birth date and employee address.
But the recovery email belonged to a domain registered by Northstar Events.
The device used to submit the application had connected through Hale Development's office network.
Marcus leaned back.
"That is much better than a rumor."
Priya nodded.
"And we have more."
The three months of rent paid for Lydia's mother had come from the same account.
The payment had been designed to create a visible benefit connected to Lydia.
Adrian felt sick at the precision of it.
Vanessa and Grant had not merely planned to accuse Lydia.
They had built a story around her life.
"Why her?" Daniel asked.
Lydia answered from the screen.
"Because I refused to sign the invoices."
Nora looked toward her.
"That was enough."
Lydia nodded.
"And because I saw Vanessa with the bracelet."
Adrian walked toward the window.
Below them, reporters gathered outside the building.
The engagement story had become public spectacle.
He could not stop that now.
But he could decide what kind of response carried his name.
"No personal attacks," he said.
"No edited clips."
"No speculation."
"We release verified financial facts only after counsel and the auditors approve them."
Daniel nodded.
"And the gala?"
The Vale Family Education Fund gala was the next evening.
Canceling would look like panic.
Proceeding could look reckless.
Adrian considered both options.
"The gala continues."
Nora raised an eyebrow.
"With Vanessa on the host committee?"
"Not anymore."
Adrian looked at Lydia on the monitor.
"And neither you nor any household employee will be turned into a public prop."
Lydia seemed relieved.
Then her screen froze.
A second later the video call disconnected.
Marcus checked his tablet.
"Her connection dropped."
Adrian immediately called her phone.
No answer.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Marcus was already contacting the security officer stationed outside Lydia's apartment building.
The officer answered.
Marcus listened for five seconds and looked at Adrian.
"Lydia left ten minutes ago."
"Left with whom?"
May you like
Marcus's face darkened.
"Grant Hale."
