Chapter 10 - The Clinic Behind the Gates.

The hidden passage behind the clock led to an abandoned carriage tunnel.
Ruth waited there with a flashlight and wrapped Bella in a blanket.
"Your mother built more exits than Eleanor found," she said.
Sophie had drawn the tunnel map on the back of Bella's birth announcement.
Ruth carried it for six years inside the lining of her purse, waiting for a signal she feared would never come.
Bella asked why all the adults had waited so long.
Ruth answered honestly.
"We were afraid one person could not defeat her."
Bella looked back at the dark passage.
"Then stop being one person."
They climbed into Tomas's truck and vanished through the workers' gate.
Ruth sent copies of Sophie's map to Adrian, Keene, and Maya before turning off her phone.
She chose a safe house owned by a retired nurse who had once tried to report Saint Orison.
Bella sat between them, holding the straight pin from her braid like a medal she did not want anyone to see.
Eleanor discovered the empty passage two minutes later.
She ordered Miles to close every road around the estate.
By then, Adrian and Keene were already following Saint Orison's ambulance north.
The ambulance turned onto a private airfield instead of the highway.
Adrian saw Sophie's face through the rear window.
A private jet waited with its engines running.
Keene rammed the airfield gate with her car.
Adrian jumped out before the vehicle stopped.
Two orderlies dragged Sophie toward the plane.
He tackled the first and caught Sophie as the second released her.
She weighed almost nothing in his arms.
For a heartbeat, neither husband nor wife spoke.
Adrian touched the scar near Sophie's temple and recognized the place he had kissed on their wedding morning.
"I believed them," he said.
"They made sure you did," Sophie answered.
She placed his hand over the wedding ring hanging at her throat.
"I kept this because it remembered my name when they would not use it."
Dr. Sutton appeared at the aircraft stairs with a syringe.
Keene aimed her weapon at him.
"Put it down."
Sutton smiled and held the needle against his own sleeve.
"Mrs. Mercer has judges who will call this a medical transfer."
"A camera is calling it kidnapping," said a woman behind them.
Maya Chen, an investigative reporter, stepped from a fuel truck with her phone broadcasting live.
The orderlies surrendered.
Sutton ran toward the plane, but the pilot locked the door.
Sophie collapsed against Adrian.
"Bella?"
Ruth called at that exact moment.
"She's safe with Tomas, but Eleanor knows about the tunnels."
Sophie gripped the phone.
"Do not take Bella to the cottage."
An explosion rolled across the distant hills.
Smoke rose in the direction of the estate.
The gardener's cottage had erupted in flames.
Ruth screamed Bella's name.
Tomas answered from another car.
They had left moments before the blast.
Sophie told Adrian that Eleanor kept a private airstrip manifest in the west-wing archive.
It documented years of illegal patient transfers and coerced guardianships.
"That ledger can end her," Sophie said.
"Then why didn't she destroy it?" Keene asked.
Sophie looked toward the smoke.
"Because it also controls Conrad, Sutton, and half her board."
Adrian helped her into Keene's car.
A message appeared on his phone from Eleanor.
May you like
It showed Bella's empty bedroom and a clock counting down from sixty minutes.
BRING ME THE LEDGER, OR THE NEXT ROOM WILL NOT BE EMPTY.
