Chapter 3 - Eleven Missing Minutes.

Adrian shoved the phone into his pocket before the lock clicked.

Miles Doran, the estate security chief, entered with two uniformed officers.

Eleanor followed them, still wearing white.

"There she is," Eleanor said, pointing at Bella.

"My granddaughter attacked a member of staff and staged this grotesque scene."

Bella's face went blank with practiced terror.

Adrian rose between her and the officers.

"My daughter is the victim."

Officer Keene examined the red marks on Bella's wrists.

"Who restrained you, sweetheart?"

Bella stared at Eleanor.

"I don't remember."

Eleanor sighed as if disappointed by a poor performance.

Miles announced that security footage had already been collected.

They watched it in the library.

At 1:07 p.m., Bella appeared near the greenhouse carrying the black bag.

Her wrists were free.

At 1:09 p.m., the screen dissolved into gray static.

The picture returned at 1:20 p.m., showing Bella on the patio with her hands bound.

Eleven minutes had vanished.

Miles blamed an electrical fault.

Adrian knew the estate system had three independent backups.

"Show me the server log," he ordered.

Miles hesitated for half a second.

That hesitation told Adrian more than the footage did.

One officer returned from the driveway carrying a roll of black duct tape.

It had been found beneath the driver's seat of Ruth Calder's car.

Ruth had cared for Bella since infancy.

She had slept on the nursery floor through Bella's fever at age three and taught her to tie the ribbons at the ends of her braids.

She had also challenged Eleanor more than any employee who remained at the estate.

Two days earlier, Ruth had refused to let Miles search Bella's room without Adrian present.

The planted tape suddenly looked less like evidence than retaliation.

She was dragged into the library in handcuffs, crying that someone had planted it.

Eleanor touched Adrian's arm.

"You trusted the wrong woman again."

Ruth looked directly at Bella.

"Tell him about the fountain."

Miles pushed her toward the door.

Bella lunged forward.

"She didn't do it!"

Every adult turned toward her.

Eleanor's soft smile vanished.

Bella covered her mouth, as if she had broken a command.

Officer Keene knelt.

"What is at the fountain?"

Bella said nothing more.

Adrian asked Miles to produce the access record for Ruth's car.

Miles claimed no such record existed.

Adrian knew every garage bay used a coded entry pad.

When he demanded the raw server, Eleanor accused him of frightening Bella with paranoid questions.

Officer Keene quietly wrote down the server model and serial number.

As the officers left, she slipped Adrian her card.

On the back she had written, DO NOT USE HOUSE PHONES.

Eleanor saw the exchange but pretended not to.

Adrian realized his mother was allowing the investigation to continue because she believed every path still ended with her.

That confidence frightened him more than an open threat.

That night, Adrian slept in a chair beside her bedroom door.

At 2:13 a.m., he woke to find Bella standing over him.

She removed the ribbon from one braid and unfolded a strip of paper hidden inside it.

It was a child's map of the garden.

A red X marked the old fountain.

Beneath it, Bella had written two words.

May you like

WHITE ROOM.

Someone knocked three times from inside her bedroom wall.
