Chapter 12 - The Brother Who Lied.

Adrian wanted to drive straight to the safe house, but Sophie stopped him.

"Miles wants you on the road while Eleanor seals the estate."

Noah opened the ledger and showed them a page labeled FINAL LEVERAGE.

Beside Adrian's name, Eleanor had written one word.

BELLA.

Every powerful person in the ledger had a human weakness reduced to a single line.

Conrad's was a hidden account.

Sutton's was an unlicensed trial.

Noah's was Sophie.

"I lied for six years because Mother promised Sophie would live if I obeyed," Noah said.

"She sent me one photograph every month."

Sophie turned away, unable to look at him.

Adrian asked why Noah had not gone to the police.

"The first detective I called delivered me back to her."

Noah handed Keene a recorder containing that detective's threat.

It was enough to bring state investigators who did not answer to the Mercer name.

Maya posted copies of the ledger to three encrypted servers.

For the first time, destroying the book would not destroy the truth.

Ruth called from the safe house while Maya worked.

She whispered that a patrol officer had arrived claiming to escort them to federal protection.

Keene recognized his badge number from Eleanor's blackmail files and told Ruth not to open the door.

Glass shattered over the call.

Ruth pushed Bella through a rear window, but Miles was waiting in the alley.

He seized Bella while the corrupt officer held Ruth at gunpoint.

Bella drove the straight pin into the sleeve of Miles's coat and tore away a strip of fabric.

She dropped the strip beside Tomas's tire so Ruth would know which vehicle took her.

Even while terrified, she kept leaving doors for the people following behind.

Tomas drove his truck into the officer's car and freed Ruth, but Miles escaped with the child.

Eleanor's voice came through the estate speakers.

"Bring the original to the ballroom."

A camera feed appeared on an archive monitor.

Bella sat in the room of dead clocks with her wrists taped to the arms of a chair.

Miles stood behind her.

Her beige shirt was torn at one shoulder, but her braids and white sneakers were unmistakable.

Sophie pressed both hands to the screen.

"My baby."

Bella looked toward the hidden camera.

"Dad, don't give her the book."

Miles covered her mouth.

Adrian could see that Bella had worked one hand partly free.

The tape around her left wrist was loose where she had rubbed it against the chair's metal edge.

She was not waiting passively for rescue.

She was creating the seconds Sophie would need.

Eleanor stepped into frame wearing the same flowing white robe.

"Your daughter has always confused courage with noise."

Adrian lifted the ledger.

"You want it, you get me with it."

"That has always been the arrangement."

Noah showed Adrian a service shaft leading above the clock room.

Sophie would crawl through it while Adrian staged the exchange.

Keene warned that the west wing's fire system had been disabled.

The smell of gasoline was already entering the archive.

Noah opened the door to the ballroom.

Conrad stood on the other side with a pistol.

He fired once.

Noah fell against the shelves.

The ledger slipped from Adrian's hands.

Conrad caught it and smiled.

"Mrs. Mercer sends her thanks."
