Chapter 6 - The White Room.

Keene swerved onto a gravel service road as the SUV struck them again.
The passenger window shattered across Adrian's lap.
He recognized Miles behind the other wheel.
"Hold on," Keene shouted.
She braked beside a drainage ditch and let the SUV race past.
Then she turned sharply through an orchard too narrow for Miles to follow.
They reached the estate through the old workers' gate.
Eleanor's guards were searching the main road.
Tomas, his wounded arm in a sling, met them inside the gardener's cottage.
"Bella is still on the property," he said.
"I saw them take food below the fountain."
Adrian unfolded Bella's map.
A line he had mistaken for a path ended beneath the west hedge.
They found an iron hatch concealed under artificial grass.
Stone stairs descended into cold darkness.
At the bottom waited a room painted entirely white.
There were no windows and no handles on the inside of the door.
A child's chair stood beneath a bright lamp.
Black tape clung to one armrest.
On the opposite wall, someone had drawn rows of tiny doors in pencil.
Most were crossed out.
One remained open beneath a crooked sun.
Bella had added her initials beside it.
Adrian imagined her sitting alone and designing an exit because the adults around her had failed.
The shame nearly bent him in half.
Keene touched the fresh pencil mark.
"She expected to come back here," she said.
"Or she expected you to find it."
Adrian whispered Bella's name.
Her voice answered through a vent.
"Dad?"
He tore the metal cover loose and found another speaking tube.
"Where are you?"
"Grandma moved me to the room with the dead clocks."
Adrian remembered the abandoned west wing, where a lightning strike had stopped every clock six years earlier.
Keene photographed the room while Tomas opened a steel cabinet.
Inside were files on judges, doctors, trustees, and former Mercer employees.
Each file contained debts, affairs, prescriptions, or private photographs.
Eleanor had built an empire from other people's shame.
There were notes describing exactly which fear worked on each target.
One judge feared exposure of his son's debts.
A hospital director feared losing her citizenship.
A state senator feared a recording Eleanor labeled HOTEL APRIL.
Keene realized the files explained why every complaint against Saint Orison had disappeared.
Adrian found Ruth's name on a blank folder.
Eleanor had not discovered a secret to use against her, so she had created a crime instead.
One folder carried Sophie's name.
Another carried Bella's.
Adrian opened his daughter's file and found a laboratory report.
PATERNITY EXCLUDED was stamped across the page.
The report listed a collection date from the week Bella was born.
Adrian had been in the delivery room every minute and remembered the nurse sealing his sample in front of him.
The signature attributed to that nurse was misspelled.
Still, one printed sentence had the power to awaken every fear Eleanor had planted in him.
He hated himself for even looking at Bella differently in his memory.
Keene took the report from him.
"This lab lost its license three years ago."
A slow clap came from the stairway.
Conrad Pike, the Mercer family attorney, stood above them with Miles and two guards.
"Your mother hoped you would find that particular page," Conrad said.
Tomas hurled the steel cabinet into the lights.
Keene fired one warning shot into the ceiling.
Adrian crawled toward Bella's voice as men shouted around him.
His hand found a loose brick beneath the vent.
Behind it was a small brass key and a note in Sophie's handwriting.

The note contained only one instruction.
TRUST THE CHILD, NOT THE BLOOD.
